The point I was trying to make is that some people seem to thing that a 220 CDI with and AMG Line badge or AMG "styling" and or other AMG bits is an a AMG. It's not.

Ever since the C36/E36/SL60 an AMG has always had a fk off engine as the centre piece.

Although it is true that before that trio hit the market saddos could ask AMG to add AMG visual bits to their 2.0 4 pots if they wanted.

But that always has been and always will be tragic.

The 43 engine is not hand built, I don't know about the 53. but it is part-electric. Neither are big thumping V8/12 that the marque is known for. Not true AMGs in my book, though I accept my view of what constitiutes a true AMG (the engine) may be considered old-fashioned now!

I don’t get it. A C63 has such a terrible image anyway, why would anyone want to aspire to it?

I guess people have different opinions. The seem to sell nicely I’m sure Mercedes have got over the ‘terrible image’

You’re right. They’ve an appalling image these days, second only to the simply dreadful and frankly deeply embarrassing BMW X6 coupe-type-thing.

An AMG IS an AMG irrespective of whether its engine has a dinky little plaque to say it was 'supposedly' hand built by Fritz. The mat logos & alloy wheel mouldings say so as do the cars title on the registration documents which is good enough for me.
If such badging & marketing dilutes any imagined superiority in the minds of owners who spent extra money on buying what they think are 'proper' AMG's than that is just too bad - tough eh?
