I've been looking at 2016 Merc SLs (as in plural SL, not an SLS, sadly!).

It seems that there is the AMG Line, which is most common, but there's also a few SL Edition cars about. But I can find no trace of any information about them at all. Spent ages Googling it, and I've even managed to find and download the 2016 brochure, but that only mentions the AMG Line.

It seems to be a slightly less sporty slightly better equipped version. It also seems to be the only way to get Distronic cruise control, all the SL Edition models seem to have it, none of the AMG Lines do (which is a pain, prefer the look and the interior of the AMG Line).

My understanding is that AMG Line models have just the aesthetics of genuine AMG cars, extra body mouldings & some badges. Mercedes owners get very precious about these 3 letters & immensely irritated that you can buy a Mercedes that looks as though it has a 'hand built engine with the name of the man who built it inscribed on a dinky little plaque stuck to the plastic engine cover' yet it does not.
In all fairness AMG Line cars are usually better equipped but there were & are no special editions of late.
Now nearing their end the current models do look a bit Chavvy with their oversized blingy alloys & oversized price tags.
Earlier models Mercedes dealer serviced regularly make good cruisers with lots of toys & are coupe's one minute a fresh air convertible the next - genius. Hardly a youthful image & to state the obvious they are NOT sports cars nor are they meant to be.

Yes agreed, AMG Line is just a trim level, but it gets you some nice things, including 19 inch wheels that better fill the arches and beautiful fluted leather seats with contrasting piping, gorgeous.

Totally agree about the SL being a comfy coupe/cruising roadster, but that's why I like it. smile

The wife had an SLK several years ago and liked it but I thought it was, ahem, a bit of a girls car.....(there I said it), BUT I do like the bigger SL and am thinking of getting a 350.....pre 2006 for the cheaper tax.

There was a Mille Miglia Edition around 2016....

perhaps its dealer nomenclature error

No, there are lots of them. In fact at that age they seem to all be either SL 400 Edition or SL 400 AMG Line.

It seems to be that the AMG Line is the 'sporty' one and the Edition the 'comfortable' one (so AMG Line gets lowered suspension, bigger wheels with lower profile tyres etc, and that's maybe why the Edition model gets the Distronic radar cruise, is designed more for comfort and ease than sportiness)

I don't think there is a model called Edition at all. The word may be being used in classified adverts to differentiate between AMG and not AMG that's all...
Don't let it bother you... go and buy one... regardless

If I remember correctly, about 5 -6 years ago there was a variant called the SL Edition 1. Seemed like a way of packaging a few options together.

It's being used by Mercedes dealers and they don't do it to differentiate between other models (there is a C Class AMG Line for example, but no C Class Edition).

Pretty sure it is an official trim level, would seem an odd thing to invent, just be useful to know what it comprises of. Anyway no biggie.

Yep - when the R231 was launched there was a limited edition spec available called Edition 1 with: pano roof, AMG bodystyling, nappa leather, HK Logic 7 and few other bits and bobs like special paint and interior trim. Added a bit over £15k to the price.
