Hi All

Looking for some advice here as first garage fix didn’t work.

Cut a long story short last Sunday went for a drive in the family car after 2 weeks of isolation and the coolant temp alert came on, then off, stopped. It went out. Carried on and halfway home it still hadn’t come on, then all of a sudden it came on, lots of steam and pulled up, coolant pump made a pop and had split, coolant spilling out.
Had it recovered to a local Merc Specialist.
He’s replaced the Coolant pipe that’s on top of the coolant bottle, linked to radiator and water pump (I believe I’m a clueless mechanic).

Anyway all fixed, he had it ticking over stationary for a while, temp fine....drive home....different story, coolant alert came on, he did say if it does it may need a cup full of coolant.

When I got home I left it an hour to cool down.

I then topped up 250ml extra to above the line in the holder

took it for a drive 10mins in it went up to 120C stayed there and on the way up from 90-120 the fan was on.

Stopped and eventually fan stopped and went down to 90. Waited 30mins.

I was 2miles from home - 90C Temp for a mile then flicking between 100-120 with fan on again. So made it home.

Checked coolant level 1.5hrs later and same level as when I set off so none lost.

Called the garage today to explain. He did sound a bit hmm maybe serious. Thermostat possibly.

I’m clueless with mechanics so I’m just asking if anyone else has experienced this or has an idea of what it maybe and costs. I just want to be prepared. It’s already cost me £170 for a new pipe, coolant and 1.5hrs of Labour.

Any help will be very appreciated
Thanks you

I would try bleeding the system first.
