Hi guys,
My Dad has been trying to sell his w140 S600 (1998) for some time now, but without any takers. It's hardly being used and is just costing to insure and tax, so it really has to go - it's going on eBay next week.
Problem is, as there weren't that many of them made, we're finding it hard to price. I know cars of this age and engine size have taken a battering recently, but it would be great to get ideas of what you guys thought to be a fair price/reserve for it.
It's Obsidian black and has got full Mercedes service history and has about 120k on the clock. Pretty much every extra and in nice condition throughout.
So, any ideas on what it's likely to fetch?

It is criminal how little these cars are worth. Even the specialist dealers cannot shift the very best w140s: Classic Benz has had a very low mileage one for almost a year now.
Your problem will be the mileage. The non-stock wheels will depress its value, too. The first you must make a virtue of: you need a very detailed service history to overcome high miles. The latter you need to get rid of: put the original wheels back on (I can't quite tell what these are, either Carlsson six holers or the six hole forged disc wheel off the w220 is my best guess).
Ebay is probably not the place to sell it: you'll get £3k max. I suspect if you want to get the most money for it, you could put in a classic auction or take out a quarter page ad in Merc Enthusiast or the Merc Club Gazette.
You may also wish to post some further pictures and details here.

If the car is a 100% IMMACULATE example, it would be worth getting in contact with one of the older Mercedes sales specialists. Although, I don't know how interested they would be with 140k miles and the W220 S-Class alloys (ie. non original to the W140).

Cheers for all the replies guys. It is indeed the LWB variety. The reason for sale is simply that it doesn't get used enough any more - my Dad used to do a lot of long motorway journeys which this car is brilliant at. However, now he doesn't do these massive journeys he has replaced it with a Golf 1.6 as a runaround and has a Jaguar XKR for fun. It's just sitting on the drive not really being used at the moment and that seems criminal!
As for the wheels - although they're not stock, I believe they were a factory fit option at the time. I think they're 17" AMGs, but don't have the original spec sheet with me at the moment so not able to check. There's a better picture of them here if any Merc enthusiast might be able to identify them?

Yup, these wheels are definately not original W140 series alloys. They are genuine Mercedes alloys, and from an S-Class, but from the next generation W220 S-Class and also used on the C215 CL-Class.But they are not AMG alloys.
Are you sure they are 17"? They look more like 18" to me

Not at home for a little while, so will have to look if they are 17 or 18" when I get back on Tuesday.
Having just moved house we don't yet have any outbuildings in which it could be stored (and won't for a good few years). If we did, then we'd just put it in storage for the next 20 years! But as it stands, it's in very nice condition so both my Dad and I would rather it went to a nice new home than just sitting on our drive, not getting the use it deserves.
...plus, it's getting harder to convince Mum that three people really need five cars!

Well, if it's any help to the op, a mate of mine recently (May, I think) got £3250 for an nearly identical S600 that was a 94M reg with over 140k on it, so I think your asking price is very reasonable as your car is one of the last W140's, and a very desirable one at that. On the subject of the W140, I personally feel that they have bottomed out and will actually start to rise. The reason being that it is becoming apparent to many entusiasts that these cars are the last proper 'old school' Merc. Certainly in the current climate it is only enthusiasts who are buying and not the Jack the Lad types that just want a cheap bit of flash but who invariably end up buying a cheap bit of trash, and this should be used to your advnantage as the stock of decent cexamples is outnumbered by the rubbish which is gradually being scrapped anyway. With this in mind you might well find that your car will be worth more in about 18 months time, so it could be worth considering hanging on to it.

I had a look at the car during the week and, overall, was impressed with it.
The only things I would recommend having a look at is when the shocks were last done (there was a noticeable weight transfer at high speed)and get someone decent to do the front bonnet edge rust.
There is an exceptional independent garage that I would recommend using - happy to pass his details along if you like.

Wow!!!! To me in Perth Australia this was a BARGAIN. I reckon I would have paid $14000.00 AU (About 5000.00 UK) PLUS SHIPPIMG TO AUS. I'll keep looking for a Black W 140 S600 with ALL options (1997/8) Present cars I have are 92 S 500 and 88 300E both in mint condition. I guess freigt to Aus would be about $5000.00 AU. We only have to change Speedo and Oddometer from MPH to Kilometers as the Aus standard. At least the steering wheel is on the correct side. Cheers and Merry Xmas to all.
