Yes - mine has just gone!! has anyone any detail, or photos of the tank showing what has fallen off, or how to get it out, or know of an "Independent"who can sort it ?

I have been in touch with MBUK, who deny liability, but it appears to be a clear case of "not fit for purpose" !! Has anyone had any luck with them?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Last year MB replaced my petrol tank under warranty with exactly the same problem so see if you can get it replaced under warranty or at least some 'goodwill' towards it as it is a known problem.

Thanks - I am still dealing with them - although they have said "we are unable to offer a goodwill gesture" - I don't really want, or asked for goodwill I just want goods fit for purpose!

What year is yours, - do you know if the design has changed?

April 2004.

You need to push them over this as it IS a known problem and my local MB dealer sorted it without question.

Mine is a Jan 04 and after ALOT of complaining, I also got MBUK to sort it under goodwill. I would suggest you keep trying. By the way, there are some dealers who are willing to do the job for not much more than £1100 so bare that in mind too as my first quotes were over £2200.

I work at an independant Mercedes specialist and we're doing these tanks far too regularly! It seems that the Daimler big wigs aren't prepared to deal with the issue. The tanks alone are £566, a bit of a blow. I certainly wouldn't entertain a £2k plus bill at a dealer though, we charge around £1000.

Just a quick one,

What do people on here think a Common Fualt is?

How many have to be affected?

Replaced another one yesterday, always seems to be a 500 for some reason rather than the 350, 55 or 600 etc. I don't know what number constitutes common but from just our local customer base we replace far too many!

Just heard back from Mercedes, they say that it is both almost unknown, and would be the result of driving it round a corner too fast with a full tank, and therefore not covered.

I might be asking for a testament.

PS Drive slowly, in a straight line.

THANKS

Are they having a laugh?

If it is NOT a known problem then why have so many been replaced under warranty. MB took less than 30 mins to authorise mine.

"Driving a SL55 AMG too fast round a corner" - now that would just not do would it !!!

If you want confirmation that this is a common problem and indeed authroised by MB in record time - call Mercedes WSM and ask them about V8SKX (500 SL) that they did last year.

It effects them all unfortunately, not too sure about the latest facelifted cars but I'm pretty much certain it's been the same tank throughout the R230's life cycle.

I was told that the baffles were added in late 02 - so the earliest cars eg. mine don't suffer from this. If mine had baffles I'd have expected them to have failed (every other thing has frown) - I can hear fuel sloshing faintly sometimes, it's certainly not intrusive and I find in quite comforting - that sloshing indicates that I'm not going to get a 2K bill!

I also work at a Mercedes Specialist

We have done more than our fair share of tanks to

They can be repaired though. They can cut the tanks open and reweld the tin baffle that come loose, which make the repair alot cheaper
