Did the mechanic check that there was oil in it?

Sounds very much like there wasn't.

Am I the only one that is slightly suspicious that they're offering to buy it? That means they're confident they can fix it and sell it for a profit.
How well do you know them and what's their reputation like?

From the small amount of information here I would suggest you concider a new motor or rebuild rather than waste any more money on 'changing plugs' type diagnostics.

Low compression is a gasket, valve or piston issue, all of which need the engine in bits to fix it.

Sadly you won't know if your existing lump is any good until it is in bits.

If the root cause was known that could help in short cutting the 'scrap it' decision. As others have said it shoulds like oil starvation which would mean most of the 'not been oiled' oily bits will be scrap. However it could of overheated, bent valve etc etc...

How much is a unit from a scrappy?

A re-build may set you back a few k depending on the spec.

Finally on the 'get rid' decision, you will never get more for a broken one than you will for one working (value wise) but it probably comes down to hassle / time / confidence.

it must be cheaper to find an engine out of a crashed car and just swap the engine out than completely rebuild an engine.
