Spider planning
Discussion
I have a 159 2.4 at the moment and a Saab 93 aero convertible tuned by Hirsch to 295bhp.
I am hankering after a Spider and in particular a v6. Probably a 3.0 916 and its probably going to replace the Saab.
Question, am I missing a trick in only wanting the V6 engine? If I change that search criteria I have much more choice open to me. I haven't driven either options back to back but I'm happy that the car is for me. I just can't make up my mind on spending more on a V6 or less on a different model.
Or, keep the Saab, sell the 159.....but then.....where do the dogs go! Decisions decisions.

My personal feeling is yes you are potentially missing out by just aiming for a V6 Spider, depends whether the Busso noise is the major factor to you or not.
The Spider isn't an especially stiff car and I find the Twin Spark suits the car much better, lot less mass up front and it feels just about right power wise for the car. Obviously a GTV is a bit different but you're not looking for one of those.
It will feel slow compared to either of your other cars but a half decent TS will run rings around your 159 (I've got a 159 1750 TBi Ti as well), they're good fun cars and I'd certainly recommend a TS Spider.

Having owned 8 twinspark GTV/spider and 2V6 GTV's I know there is around 100lbs weight difference between 2&3 litre cars, I found you really have to be pushing it for the twinny to gain an advantage, I love my twinnies but the V6 is better, having said that I happily cruise around in my current spider 2.0 not wishing it was a 3.0, you need to drive them both and I suspect the noise will get you.
Think I have taken the plunge on a silver twin spark.
Waiting to hear back. Had a really good chat with the guys at AlfaWorkshop while my 159 was in for service and acted on their advice on whats important. I'm handy with a spanner and fancied something sufficiently analogue for me to play with. Everything I read suggests that these are the cars to go for.
Excited now.
