Considering a huge variety of different dailies currently and I keep coming back to 159 wagons, mainly as even now they are simply stunning things to look at - There’s a lot of talk of fairly bad mpg out there for these cars due to the high weight mainly, what is the concensus regarding economy for the 1.9 vs the 2.0 JTDM engines? I’m mostly concerned about economy on a long motorway run rather than town driving or short journeys.

Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

Not sure about the mpg, but when I drove a couple back to back earlier this week. It’s the 2.0l you need.

Why do you say so Les? Interested in your insight from back to back drives

I have a 1.9, chipped and with 120,000miles

Plenty fast enough

I do about 750 miles a week, that is a 50% town, 25% rural and 25% motorway.

I am getting 40.00 mpg.

Not sure if this helps...I have a remapped 156 JTDM 150 with 150,000 miles, and I get around 40 mpg on a 350 mile a week commute, motorway/decent A roads.

A 2.4 diesel mapped does an easy 40mpg smile

Thanks Mondie - do you have experience of this? If so which particular map? And would that apply to the Q4 2.4D too?

Not surprisingly, the type of journey has a huge effect on mpg. My youngest son had a 159SW 1.9 Jtd for three or four years. He could easily hit mid 50s mpg on his very easy 30-mile commute, but it could easily drop to high 20s for prolonged local driving. His average over 92 tanks was 38mpg

It is a pretty heavy car and acceleration from standstill really hurts fuel consumption. Cruising at a steady 60-ish in traffic will return amazing figures

Regardless of the consumption, it’s still a good-looking way of getting around. Quite wheel-sensitive though - Ti wheels are best.

Thanks for the insight - Definitely agree it’s a great looking car in Ti spec ... The car will mostly be used for long cruises so that’s some reassuring info - My wife has a Leaf which is perfect for short local stuff.

How reliable is 159 with 2.4 jtdm? Any common issues or general info? I'm little bit of tempted to change my winter beater for one of these.

Edit - I left fuelly.com on US setting - my son’s 159 averaged 46mpg over 92 tanks

Pretty good, as long as it’s maintained well. Quite tuneful for a diesel and very responsive to mapping. Fuel economy isn’t its strong-point though....

1.9 felt very under powered in heavy car, 2.0 much better. 1.8tbi awesomeness!

For economy, don't touch the petrols. Both the 1.8TBi and the v6 are great fun engines but thirsty. The 2.4 JTDM is a very nice engine to drive but not economical for a diesel and makes the car a bit nose heavy.

When I test drove the 1.9 JTDM, I immediately knew I would not buy that before I reached the end of the road. The 2.0 JTDM was much better and made it an acceptable car that I could have lived with if I did a lot more mileage. The reported real world fuel consumption on various web sites appears to be essentially the same so it seems like a no brainer to me to go at least for the 2.0.

That said, I have the 1.8 TBi and my second choice would have been the 2.4 JTDM smile

What’s the real world mpg like on the TBi then? 35on a run? 25 round town or more ruinous than that?

The 2.4 is thirsty and the most unreliable of the engines but it’s a nice motor. The 1.9 is the engine for a mixture of okish pace and fuel economy. Just the swirl flaps that are a bit risky.

I did 130,000 in 1.9 with excellent reliability and approx 47mpg.

Bought myself a 1.9, right price and so far at least the right car ... yes it’s not going to win any drag races but that’s the last reason I bought the car ... I have my Clio 172 for tearing around at high revs should the mood take me.

Just considering a economy remap now and the DPF mod but the range of differing opinions out there on the latter makes it very confusing. I’d love to go ahead with it but not if i’m going to have problems come MOT time.

The 2.0jtdm is essentially an improved, quieter, reworked and refined 1.9 and is the one to go for, there are 2 horsepower version available, one with 136 and one with 170hp. However the 2.0 commands a higher (sometimes double) initial premium over any 1.9, partly due to the 2.0 being in the later production run. The 2.0 also has a more reliable Gearbox, and superior tested EGR and DPF setup. The 1.9 150hp was brilliant in the GT and 156 but in the 159 has to work hard, however it does not feel slow. Yhe 1.9 is bullet proof, especially if the EGR is blanked (the EGR dumps its soot all over the MAP sensor), they have been known to swallow the odd swirl flap though.

I’ve had one nearly 4 years, best you’ll see on a long run keeping it around 70ish is 34 mpg. Around town is definitely not much more than 25-27 mpg, probably average 29 mpg from a tank.

Not ruinous but glad I don’t do mega miles in it.
