They don't understand the brand and type of customer. OK if you're buying a basic Fiat 500 but not when you're buying a AR performance model.

The mistake is they should have split the dealership separating out AR and possibly Abarth models to cater for that customer base.

I've found some staff good at main dealers but more often than not they don't stay for long and move on or get head-hunted.

You are spot on!

I ordered a QF from Palmers and it took them a fortnight from having the car in their compound to check it, while still dirty from transit,
to me begging them to clean it and check it again (without the dirt).

In the end I've told them to stuff it. They were always too busy! perhaps its ME!
perhaps excitement is something they don't do or get to see very often.

There are good and bad dealers for all marques in my, limited, experience.

My local Mazda dealer is excellent not so the Nissan dealer, ended up using one a couple of counties away who were excellent. I have two Mercedes dealers local to me, both the same company, one is rubbish the other great.

Same with Alfa, i have had good an bad experiences.

I think its more the staff than the dealers themselves and its not easy to just fire someone these days. smilesmile

You go to the dealer for the car you want? The dealer experience comes last for me.

My wife and I bought a smart car from Mercedes, we were treated like royalty, the showroom was very swanky, there was a nice play area for the kids with Lego, they served nice proper tea, coffee and soft drinks and receptionist has the whitest teeth and fakest tits Ive ever seen, however for me I do not want a C class. A man sat in a portakabin picking his nose at the Fiat dealer, Id still buy the Alfa?

We are not talking posh showroom etc but I didn't expect to have to beg them to get the car cleaned before we collected it.

As we were travelling a long way we wanted the sale to be hassle free!

The sales guy told me previously, that many of their new cars are not free from damage so he would have to correct any issues before collection,

so WHY didn't they get off their backsides and sort it - they weren't even cleaning it themselves they were bringing in a valet company.

Am I being unreasonable?

Mine was still being valeted by Stevie Wonder and Roy Orbison when I travelled 200 miles to collect mine. I gave them two weeks notice of my arrival, bought over the phone so would have expected it to be in good order given it was pre-registered with 120 miles on it. It wasn't and I was at the point of rejecting the car until more money was knocked off for me to sort it. Poor, very poor experience (Slough AR).

More details required on that Merc dealership please......................

To all the above , there are some good dealers , in fairness to the dealers I know 2 people who have closed their Alfa dealerships and both sited Alfa as being “ hardwork” to deal with as one of the reasons , my experience buying an early 4c was Alfa UK were a lottery on info but the smoke and mirrors from Italy didn’t help them .

They are really special cars to own, if you want one research a good dealer to service and the best to buy , it’s like most cars and im being very general , those who sell cheapest just want to sell so service is secondary and will in probability be just that .

Just do some research , a few dealers recently have stopped selling Alfa’s but retained service and they may be your answer for aftercare as that’s what they need to concentrate on

For me HWM , Walton on Thames , no longer selling are great for service or the Swindon dealer ( Johnson’s ) are good . Snows Southampton are questionable but that’s just my experiences

Of the independents Jamie at Alfaworkshop for me are the best

Alfa ownership has always been interesting but they so great to drive I’ll fotgive them

We went on customer feedback at Palmers, they are a three hour drive from us, but because we thought they were the best we purchased from then,
but its been a pretty shocking story so far,

We lost our deposit when we pulled out of the car, but a media company has kindly offered to cover our loss if we spend time with them to cover the story,

Alfa Romeo Customer Services will also receive copies of the correspondence of our experience with the brand.

Fingers crossed - nothing to lose

Loosing your deposit when you pull out of a car on the face of it seems fair enough on the dealers part but the reasons may have left you feeling hard done by so I’m guessing there’s a lot more to it . Best of luck resolving it . Out of interest did you buy elsewhere ??

This as only just happened, so therefore we don't really know who to try next?

Surely there's a Alfa Romeo Dealership out there that gives a damn, because the one I picked surely didn't

If it was Palmers in Hemel Hempstead I'm surprised. I bought a used Jeep from them in March and the service I received was exemplary.

I live in East Sussex but they were the only ones that had the very limited edition I had been searching for, hence the long journey. I was dealing with Karl Brown and he made it a very easy experience. When I turned up, as planned, to collect the car it was ready looking superb having been freshly detailed inside and out. The paperwork was dealt with smoothly and efficiently I was, and am, very happy with them.

Again it may well be the person you dealt with being lazy, inefficient or on their way out which has soured the experience, such a shame.

We had Matthew who was amazing from the start, then they moved him to another dept, which didn't help but he came back, saying "he was the man to complete the sale, so don't worry". (£60,000 is a small house in my neck of the woods)

The brand new car from Italy had arrived, but it sat in their compound.

It was obvious at this stage Matthew had lost interest in the sale, everyone was too busy, to clean or to tint it,

My new QF was getting old before I had even seen it. (September new reg isn't that far away)

I asked him to personally check it (still trusting him) but if he hadn't even bothered to get it cleaned, whats the point in checking the paintwork for blemishes

Its my fault for getting excited......., I should have had "the not bothered attitude" like everyone else at this dealership
(not including the one lady I spoke to on the phone - who was lovely).

Might be worth a call to Paul Jones at Stoneacre in Chesterfield.
He’s well known in Alfa circles.
