I'm going to buy an Alfa Romeo 159 within the next 2 months - Which Engine is the best to go for but probably more importantly which one is best to avoid !!!
Any pointers is greatly appreciated and who's recommended for servicing in the North West - THANKS

How are you going to use it? Mega distance on the motorway - 1.9 or 2.4 diesel. Shorter distances and more “driving fun” - 1750TBI.

We have a 2.4 Ti, for super long distance motorway work, I can’t fault it.

I'm going to use it mainly in summer to run around in, no notable distance work, just for fun (I have a van for work), have you done any mods or upgrades, I'm leaning towards a 2.4 diesel !!!

1750tbi for petrol and if you absolutely have to have a diesel the 2.0 in the late cars is about the best, not as powerful but lighter & more responsive than the earlier ones and for the love of god not the 1.9 Eco

I didn’t realise they did a 2.0l. I do agree with comments regarding 1.9 engine as I ran one for 3yrs and the turbo lab on it was awful albeit the car was fun to drive once it gets going

Don't get the 3.2 unless you want 4wd as well.

Nothing 'wrong' with it but the 1750TBi is the best engine in these. They carry a premium though.

t. 3.2 owner.

Thanks for all the replies, I've ended up with a 2.4 Ti, it looks great IMO and still cuts it parked up against my BM.

Great choice. This is my 2.4 TI. 210k on the clock and the engine is still strong as an ox. It smokes on DPF regen and the mpg drops but I average 35mpg round town. On a run it’s high 40s. We did St Ives to Congleton over summer in one go, no stops in 4 hours. Cruise control set and the thing just doesn’t miss a beat.

It’s need the odd consumable, wheel bearing, pads etc but I literally can’t fault it.

Lovely cars these 2.4s, could be tempted in to one myself, what's the cambelt interval and rough cost to change on them?

these guys are saying

https://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/alfa_romeo_timing_b...

2.4 litre 20 valve diesel engines / 159 / Brera / Spider
Replacing cambelt, tensioner, idler and water pump including VAT GBP 450

The interval service on a 2.4 MJET cambelt is 90,000 miles or 5 years

i would go for every 4 years 70 to 80 K just to avoid the stress !!!

Ha, yeah, I've had an Alfa cambelt go on me and take the engine out - I'll get over it one day! redfacecry

Great thread this

Looking at an Alfa as a possible commuter/daily

I’d really fancy the tbi which I’ve seen a few around the £5-5.5k mark, same as the 2.4l diesel.
Commute at present is around 40 there and back.
This may increase if I move on to pastures new.

Which would you pick up to say a 60-70 mile overall daily commute Nd how reliable are they at this age point as weren’t Alfa’s unreliable up until the last 10 years. I

My 2.4 ti SW will likely be up for sale.
Its the 2.4 qtronic but I don't do the miles for a diesel. Its an 08 with less than 80k on the clock. I walk to work so it sits at home 4 days a week. I've a hankering for a 3.2 busso 156 gta...

Very well looked after and never let me down.

That is beautiful, what kind of price are you looking for?

Thanks. Around 5.5k I think. It will need a cam belt this year (it was done at 46k but that was 5 years ago) and I've only ever had 1 key.

Bodywork is great, just the usual stone chips on the front end and some bumper scuffs on the loading lip but no rust or damage.

Black leather TI interior is mint.

Wheels are mint except for the small nick in the rear n/s because I clipped a kerb avoiding a turning lorry.

I've had it looked after by Autocasa in Cov. It had an extensive service last year: new hand brake cables, new upper and lower control arms, new rear brakes and some smaller bits. That was expensive.

It's been remapped too by Veloces in London back in 2015, apparently around 240bhp now.
