Afternoon all,

On the way to work this morning down the duel carriageway in my 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.2L Diesel and suddenly I had multiple warnings on my dash. These included: Amber ESC light, red AST light, collision assist disabled, check electronic break warning, DNA disabled and stuck in N, and amber check engine light.

I've had all this before months ago but when I turned it off and on they disappeared until today. All the lights did go off after turning the engine off and on a few times but the check engine light remains.

I've seen posts mentioning the battery but I've travelled in it all week so shouldn't be low on juice and this happened 20 minutes into a journey.

Not sure if the check engine light just needs resetting or there's a genuine issue as it's still driving fine. Only thing different about my journey today was the 3-4 inches of snow I had to defrost from my car, could freezing temps have this impact?

Any info much appreciated before I take it to get looked at!

Cheers.

I think that it's possible to reset a lot of the faults by turning the ignition on without starting the engine, turn left full lock and then right full lock, then turn ignition off--obviously this won't solve the actual underlying problem though.

Perhaps best to get a OBD tool to read the error codes?

The procedure you describe sounds like the one you go through to calibrate the Steering Angle Sensor.

I agree with you the fault codes need read to understand what the issue is. The systems are interlinked therefore an issue in one can trigger errors in several others.

I had a Guilia Quad for about 4.5 years.

After 3 years it needed a new battery.

The IBS (Irritable Battery System, or Intelligent Battery System) is not very good at all and the battery eems to be barely big enouygh.

Especially if you use stop start a lot.

I did not have many faults with my car but did get every warning light under the sun when the battery was playing up.

The weak battery is also why the rear demister rarely worked. Apparently unless the IBS sees enough health in the battery the rear demist screen will not work.

So at the risk of being predictable I would get your battery drop tested and or just replace it. Most Giulia owners agree that you can only get maybe 3 years or so out of a battery in a Giulia.

Hope that helps.

Cheers gents.

Come to think of it, my rear demister has been sub-par recently! Any recommendations for an OBD kit? I'm not very clued up on these things if I'm honest.

Thanks again.

I like the Autel units. Or you can buy any number of Bluetooth dongle type things to use with an App Like Torque or whatever people use now.

With this super cold weather I would additionally again suggest battery. My wife’s car showed a battery fault today, just about started but this cold weather can just kill them rather quickly. It flashed up on the dash low battery too.

Somewhat of an update.

I purchased and OBD2 reader online. It arrived this afternoon and when I went out to my motor the CEL was no longer on... DNA now working again too. It was still on this morning so I've not got the foggiest.

Fault codes are normally stored so it may still be worth reading them a clearing them that way if it happens again you should be able to see the new faults easier.

Yep, that’s what happened with my 2017 2.2…
