Moving Out to Perth! Forgetting anything?

Following my post a few weeks ago, it's finally happening. Contract signed, visa approved and flight being booked as we speak.
What are the often forgotten essentials to do when leaving UK for a considerable time? In my case between 2 and 4 years.
Aside from tying up my loose ends here and packing, I'm at a loss. Opened an Australian bank account, sorted healthcare and readied my phone for use out of the UK.
Don't use your phone, buy a sim or something locally. I was out in WA for a month late last year, left my data roaming on and was rewarded with a £1100 phone bill when I returned back to the UK!

I've gone for a 176 visa meaning I dont have to find work before I arrive although I'm going to make contact with a few companies in the coming months.
What are you doing for accommodation upon arrival?

Currently out in Perth, what lines of work are you looking for? might be able to help with contacts etc.
Also renting out here is really expensive, especially around Perth. You need 2 weeks deposit usually and you need to put down 1 weeks worth of rent as a security bond if you are interested in a property. This is returned if you are not successful and deducted as a first week rent if you are. Generally looking from $250+ per week depending on what you are looking for.
Trains are really good and loads of busses but what ever you do dont try and get a taxi home if you have a late one as they are pretty non existant after 11pm.

Like anywhere, there are some really dodgy areas. Some really dire, bogan infested dumps north and south of the river.
I haven't been back since 2010, but the place is certainly an interesting place to live. Incredibly expensive (overpriced for what it is) beach front and river front homes.
Lots of good areas though - but will be pricey.
If it was me, I'd be looking to be nearish the beach (what else is the point of living there??) or river to make it convenient to enjoy.
THe sprawling northern beach suburbs, while remote, are bearable - ie north of Hillarys. Closer to Perth (so more expensive) Sorrento, Floreat, etc. I'd avoid Scarborough - never really liked it.
Cottlesloe, Claremont, Swanbourne - just too expensive.
Just south of Fremantle there is some bearable stuff.
Mandurah - while really far south is now virtually commutable due to the train service.

As mentioned places are pretty expensive especially near the water.
Sounds like you want to be easily commutable to the city but still a bit quieter.
Check on realestate.com.au for rentals and buying to give you an idea of prices.
Dont really know north of the river too well but avoid living in Northbridge or Highgate areas.
Nedlands os nice just west of the city centre or south of the river como, vic park are really nice but pricey, about $400 per week for a 2 bedroom house.
Trains are reliable and loads of busses but for night life the city gets pretty dead after 11pm ish and taxis are a nightmare.
Mandurah is nice but it is a train ride 50mins ish, rockingham is about 35mins.
Fremantle is good but anywhere west of the city is pretty expensive as its close to the coast.
East you have Cannington areas (its massive subburb) but probably avoid Gosnells and maddington.
For nights out there are loads of bars in town, Northbridge isnt really its all cracked up to be and can be pretty dodgy.
Remember its about $10-$12 per pint (about 7 GBP)
Its a good place and everyone is friendly so hope it all goes well!!

You can have it stamped at the immigration office in Perth - Its free and takes 10-15mins.
Having it done in London takes a few days.
Wife posted hers off and got it back he same week.Having it done in London takes a few days.
Don't even know where the immi office is in Perth. It was just something we could 'tick off' before arriving.
