I am an ex-Perth boy living in the UK.

Thinking of going back - what's the job market like?

Is there still much 'unskilled' mining demand?

Anything else booming? I expect there is plenty of back office accountancy work etc - but I'm not an accountant.

So, what are all you guys doing out there??

Massive demand, booming economy, lots of work with companies associated with mining, big pay packets.

Anyone skilled is fine, unskilled not so much.

Any business analyst / business process engineering work out there?

My timing has been pretty poor. I did Mech Eng at Curtin, but there was no mining boom (or any boom for that matter) in 1991-92.

Did my work experience in a gold mine, but getting that was bloody hard.

How things have changed!

I'm unsure - process engineers can certainly get somewhere but the demand is for skilled, educated resources workers - its as vague as that.

Plenty of jobs, companies happy to receive CV's and a big demand for good workers. Go for it!

Well, been in the UK 20 years - and it is just starting to turn a bit sour.

I need to contact a few of my old uni mates - some of whom still work in oil& gas, mining etc - and see if there is somewhere I can get a foot in the door.

My mum has a house in Marmion, she will need me back soon to look after her in her dotage - but I won't be too happy paying $12 for a beer!!

Was in Perth in 2010, and pretty stunned at the prices. Wage inflation from the mining boom has changed Perth from a good value, isolated oasis into a city which is more expensive than NYC or Tokyo or London!

Still miss Cott, the Swan, Rotto.

I need my head examined for leaving!!

When I went back to the uk end of 2010 - 38 job apps, no offers. Back to Perth Jan 2011, 3 apps, 3 interviews, 3 offers...

Screw the $12 pint, earn Mahoosive amount more, $1.50 a litre fuel, etc - it's all relative mate.

You don't need good luck here just energy, drive and motivation smile

I was looking at some engineering company websites last night and almost all of them have vacancies advertised. One medium sized firm had 13 vacancies!

These were mostly design and project engineers but there were also those for fabricators and welders etc.

How many engineering companies in the UK have even one vacancy on their website?

One thing you will find is that the "big money" jobs require mining or mineral experience.

200 - you'll find that's quite common here. Also, what I've found is that once you get here the first job isnt necessarily the one you're aiming for its merely a stepping stone to the one you want. You may well turn up, get a job and that job ends up giving you practical resources experience as a lot of work here is linked by the associated work with the resources companies.

Well, its 2:08AM and I'm a little tired now but hopefully the 14 individually tailored CVs I've just sent will lead somewhere!

Good luck guys.

I was 20 years out of Perth in the UK too.

Took me 6 weeks from landing to working (in IT).

Been here over a year now and I can't complain.

Well, just over a week after sending out my CV, I've had two replies asking me to arrange an interview immediately upon arrival in Perth!
