What areas in Bedford are good and bad?

I'm thinking of buying a house to live in.
I'm looking for an older house that needs a little bit of work to do up. 3-4 bedrooms with drive and garage.

I'm also looking in Biggleswade and Flitwick. I need a house that is close to a mainline train station within a couple of miles.

Thanks

How about St Neots? On the fastline to London & Stevenage and only 10 minutes from B/wade or Bedford.

Letchworth, Hitchin? 25/30 mins to Kings X on a line that's generally much more reliable than Thameslink.

I've not looked at st Noets.

I've looked at Letchworth and Hitchin and for my Budget of £210,000. I don't get very much for my money.

Loads of choice in St Neots for that sort of budget - http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope... as an example

If your commuting into London, look at stops along the hitchin line as there tends to be more trains per hour than the Letchworth 'line' (same line just different stops) and quicker.

Have you looked at Baldock? I live in Hitchin and would be considering Baldock as my next place as you seem to get more for your money and its a stop on the 'Hitchin flyer' - Kings Cross to Hitchin direct, no stopping at Finsbury Park or Stevo, 20-25mins but Baldcock is the next stop after Hitchin.

Unless of course your not a commuter?

Daughter lives in Station Road Langford and good friends in Hitchin Road Upper Caldecott. Daughter loves Langford and they seem to have a very good community spirit. Upper Caldecott is more open in layout and is very near to Biggleswade shops.

Thanks for your help.

will be comuting into london next year when we move. Just looking for a new house now so has to be within a mile or 2 of a train station. Most of the areas like Hitchin are nice but out of my price range for the house i want.

Anyone know any of the areas in Bedford?

Quick search shows there are three bed houses in Letchworth for circa 250k. In this market, they'll take offers.

Worth looking in places like Stotfold too, less than 10 mins by car from Letchworth stn.

Also try Potton and Sandy. Potton is a nice sleepy backwater with a great pub smile (real ales on draught!) Only 4 miles from Sandy or Biggleswade train stations. At present you can pick up a 3 bed house for 200k.

I have lived in Biggleswade for a year now and love it. I also have friends in Potton and it does have a bit more of a country feel, but I think I would miss the train station and shops if i went out there. Its good being able to get the fast train home from London after a night out and just stumble home, rather than having to organise taxis.

Biggleswade good areas are...

Newer estate to the east of the town Saxon Gate et al. (My folks live there!)
Bird / Riverside Estate - Osprey Road and around (I had a house there for 8 years)
Houses to the North of the town (Beech Ave and around there - Trees Estate)

These are generally newer houses (70's / 80's). There are a lot of nice Victorian terrace houses on busier roads like The Baulk, Drove Road, Sun Street etc

Not so nice areas are...

Stratton Way and one or two roads around Mead End, but it's generally a pretty harmless town

Flitwick is pretty good when it comes to value for money, plus St Pancres is 45 mins on the train. I live there and I like it, decent pubs in and around Flitwick and Ampthill is within walking distance which IMO is nicer than Flitwick but more expensive. Plus there is some great country roads on the doorstep!

Out of interest what do you base that on? Decent market town, no trouble, good amenities (lack of decent restaurants though), good rail links, reasonably affluent town.

Having grown up in Flitwick and also spent 3 years going regularly to Biggleswade, I'd pick St Neots over this two!

St Neots is a bit far out for me. My wife works just in the North of Luton so St Neots would be 50min drive and she can't do that due to her Cronic fatigue.

we like the look of flitwick and Biggleswade. We have seen some nice houses in Bedford but are not sure on the areas.
