What size are they supposed to be these days anyway? Borrowed a samsonite one last time that was very good but what are people using these days, any links would be appreciated!

Size varies depending on the airline. Any suitcase with wheels will eat up valuable, usable packing space.

We bought a soft carry on that had rucksack straps. Saved that wasted space for the wheels. Made sure it came in at the right size though. And it would stuff in the overhead bin. Something I noticed with the wheeled ones, they would fit and sod all else would or you were hunting up and down for a slot or it got checked. Lowe Alpine I think.

Ah right is there no standard size then? The rucksack idea sounds good cone to think of it!

Got this fella

Size wise, we were with a major airline (going to the US), checked their allowance and worked around that. Should be on the carrier web site. We did notice that others were along the same size for both checked and carry on.

Edit. Saw an awful lot of wheeled carry on though. Horses for course I suppose.

We got a lot in it and it fitted some odd nooks and crannies in the overhead around the other stuff. And it would crumple under the seat.

Not saying its wrong, we found a few discrepancies on the web sites here and there. Also luggage shops would have a sticker on saying carry on OK or in the hold OK with no extra payments and they were wrong. One shops carryon would have been extra checked at the check in.

Yup, they change these things regularly, do you own research, etc.

However, as a starting point, prior to checking with whatever airline you are actually flying with, it's okay.

Aye, in the research we found that we had a load of weight available in the carry on, 10lbs short of the main suitcase. Some airlines had no weight limit as long as you could lift it to the overheads (anvil smuggling?), some would charge you for the duty free bag with 200 fags in when got on board if already had a carry on. Some odd stuff around.

And all of it designed specifically to relieve the unsuspecting traveller of their hard-earned.

a light jacket with big pockets sorts that problem, I don't know of any airline that charges for your coat

we got an Ikea soft wheely bag/rucksack thing, it's two rucksacks that zip together

unzip them apart, present them as two seperate carry on bags, husband n wife etc

zip them together and one person can carry them both or wheel them both
adjustable squeezy-together straps too

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/5021776...
It was reduced with an Ikea 'family card', I think it was cheaper than this though

Bonkers, I bought the exact same Lowe Alpine bag two weeks ago.

Has back pack straps you can hide away, shoulder strap you can hide away, two grab handles, too many pockets and straps every where to compress everything down.

I had 4 nights worth in the overhead locker in a Fokker 50 and a Dash 8 last week.

Can anyone supply the dimensions of the Lowe Alpine TT Carry-On 40?

ie. will it fit SleazyJet 56 x 45 x 25cm?

Sized to maximise hand luggage regulations of most major airlines (35cm wide x 55cm tall x 23cm deep)

I needed a small suitcase for a carry on a few years ago. Money was tight, so I bought a Dunlop bag. It's been brilliant (cost me 6 quid and has lasted 4 years so far!). It's also the right size for sleazyjet and bryanair. They're stil available from your unfriendly neighbourhood sportssoccer.

Oh, and as a point to note for the Sleazy-Jetters.

'Liquids' in hand luggage must be less than 100ml in any one container, but also less than 1,000ml in total, and fit comfortably in a 20cm x 20cm clear plastic bag.

Apparently, even a lipstick counts as a 'liquid' within EasyJet's definition of the rules. redface

You can bet your last penny that check-in and boarding staff are targeted with maximising revenue from those who transgress.

Info here.

Bought a pair of these for ryan air type flights a few years ago, very light weight as weight is a factor not just size for carry ons on budhet air lines. They are tubular framed and enough space for a weeks light holiday clothes, pretty good quality to boot.
