Hi all,

I've just taken delivery of a 2007 Alfa Spider (new model) yesterday evening and noticed that the underneath of the car was easily caught when going over speed bumps. That was bearable as it just meant driving over bumps very slowly. However, since driving to work this morning (down some very fun twisty lanes) I've noticed the bottom of the car catches on the road surface horrifically at about 45mph+ every time there is a dip in the road. As far as I'm aware it hasn't been modified or lowered. On inspection, the underside of the car does seem to sit quite low and there is evidence that this been scraped many many times before!

Is this a common "feature" of the new Spider?! Anything I can do? I'm worried about damaging the underside over time...

Thanks!

Hi I had a 2.2 le spider for 2 years and about 18,000 miles and cannot remember it bottoming out at all - even when loaded with a passenger and a boot full of holiday gear and surf equipment.

I suggest that you get this looked at and perhaps ask on the alfa owner forum for views there.

Best of luck.

P.S. how do you find the 2.2 - if your's has that engine?

Have you got the 2.2 petrol or 2.4 diesel / 3.2 petrol? I understand that the 2.2 has slightly lower suspension as the engine is lighter, however, I wouldn't expect it to bottom out. My Brera (pretty much the same car) never has with more than a full load.

The most common (AFAIK) suspension upgrades on these cars is slightly lower and stiffer spings which apparantly reduce the potential to bottom out as they are stiffer.

Would get it checked out if I was you....

It's the 2.2, yes. From what I've experienced so far, seems like a nice engine. The car isn't too fast, but feels quite responsive at low revs, and gives off an unexpected, but lovely, noise if you catch the revs just right in a high gear.

Thanks for the advice... Looks like I've had the thing for less than a day and I'm already booking it in to a garage! Fingers crossed, nothing too serious...
