So folks. What is your opinion of the BBC please.
As a building contractor i worked there for about 14 months in about 1998 or so.
I was shocked how much money was clearly wasted.
This then sparked an interest in what the BBC got up to.
I would like to see other folks opinions.

I don't know. An ex girlfriend of mine was willing to engage in a threesome with a hot young blonde Polish girl we knew in exchange for me allowing her a BBC. I wasn't that keen and didn't go through with it but I can see the attraction for women if the stereotype is true.

Serious answer: bloated monster that spends my money with reckless abandon on ste I don't want to see. Leave light entertainment to the commercial channels, provide me with decent sitcoms, sport, the news and documentaries, there is no need for the dancing show, baking competitions or Radio 1Xtra [sic].

I've only seen a couple in specialist productions and can't say I was that bothered by them.

It is said that once you've tried the BBC, nothing else will satisfy.

You only need to spend some time abroad to see how much better the quality of the BBC channels is.

Regarding some earlier posters I'm

a) Embarassed that I don't know any other BBC acronym;
b) Not sure whether I want to know - no mind bleach to hand at present!

It has to satisfy everyone in the country, at some level, so by default it's also going to ps off everyone in the country at some level.
It also has to do this via tv, radio, website, print etc etc.

For providing R4 and R6 it's worth the license fee, let alone the wealth of tv programmes and sports coverage that I also enjoy.

People pick on the negatives of everything, without acknowledging any of the positives, I've never understood that (although, fair enough if people don't think there are any positives I suppose).

I worked on and off as a contractor at about the same tim at Television Centre.

Compared to any other building I've worked in - before or since - the pointless bureaucracy and air of benevolent chaos was staggering.

My favourite facet of this was the traditional need to get signatures for work done. Usually this is done by whoever is on the front desk, or maybe in a facilities dept somewhere. In TV Centre, work done in each area had to be signed for separately (it was divided into 23 contracts IIRC) and almost never in the area where the work was done. We used to get all the signatures in one go at the end - it took an hour out of a four-five hour job.

What also used to particularly make me laugh were the piles of free newspapers lying about in public areas; you could leave a tory broadsheet there all day safely, but a Guardian or Indy would have been snaffled in minutes.

What i really enjoyed (not) was all the various documentary's about money wasting by the gouvernment etc that they showed. Taking the piss or what?
It really is an eye opener to see it all at work.

The BBC is far from perfect, but it is a unique part of British culture, and we would all miss the things it does best such as news & major sporting events if they either disappeared or changed fundamentally due to commercial influences. Radio 4 is worth the licence fee on its own.

The BBC's children's channels, which do not bombard their viewers with highly manipulative and cynical advertising, are also very important.

I'd agree with that, I love the BBC.
As Sky keep telling us, believe in better. They are correct, it's the BBC.

Especially now that ITV have completely abandoned any children's programming.

There is another thread running which discusses "Children of the Stones" - which is now looked on as a classic children's TV programme. It was actually an ITV programme - made by HTV. We will never see anything like this ever again from the commercial TV sector. It is only the BBC who have a remit or incentive to make such programmes.

No adverts but Auntie is as bad as the commercial channels for cynical marketing. In the Night Garden; a behemoth that sold many tens of millions of Pounds of tat to unsuspecting parents. Shows like this and Teletubbies are created solely for merchandise sales.

I think you need to differentiate the output with the management.

Without a shadow of doubt, the BBC is responsible for the best TV and Radio content in the world - or at least an inordinate proportion of the good stuff. This has increased greatly over the past 15 years as digital has enabled a wider spectrum of broadcast opportunities that has enabled the station to provide content that is more precisely targeted.

From what I read, see and hear from those on the inside is that the corporation is managed more as a government department and not a very good one at that and that the quality of output is in spite of and not because of the management.

I should imagine its because nobody wants to see their missus speared by a BBC?

Perhaps the thought of his ex-girlfriend, who he probably loved a great deal, wanting to have rough sex with a black guy in exchange for it? But any girl that would say that isn't the thought of girl i'd want to be associated or in a relationship with...or do you mean she just wanted a job at the BBC?
