What is the difference between these and would you consider yourself old or new? I'm only 16 and wondered whether it still allies to the modern generations or whether it is just something my parents talk about because they went to public school?

I still exists, as they say, Old money whispers, new money shouts.

I suppose you can think of it in terms of people where the novelty of being rich hasn't worn off, and they feel they need to let everyone know in extreme bad taste!

Many of the "old money" families are cash-poor but asset-rich. Anyway, money is just a number, behaviour is far more important. You can't buy class, it's an attitude or set of standards, not a shopping list.

I went to private school which has given me old money values but I only went because of new money, I therefore am one very confused individual when it comes to taste!

It's a ridiculous snobbish distinction that holds that inheriting money is better than actually making it. Mopst old money is dissipated in the end by successive generations of inbred morons.

All old money was new at one stage and in many cases was stolen, extorted or earned by exploiting others.

When one child says to another child "My father is richer than your father", and the other child, knowing this to be true, and being secretly rather upset about it, counters with "So? My grandfather was richer than your grandfather, and my great grandfather was richer than your great grandfather", we have the whole old/new money phenomenon in a nutshell.

I think it isn't really about the money these day, more about the attitude to money

And even 'old money' can be terribly tasteless. 'class' is an entirely different subject.

I've more respect for someone who has worked hard, and earned their own money, than someone who was born into money with no respect for the hard work that's gone into its earning.

Old or new is irrelevant today. Everybody can make money. It's just the way of using it that makes the difference. Do you enjoy your financial assets for yourself, or do you use it to enjoy the social status you achieve by it?

Who honestly cares?

Its irrelevant, as said by ewen, its how you project yourself that matters rich or not.
