I note that Nuckie isn't as 'nice' in this first episode, is this to set it up for his downfall, perhaps? (haven't read the real history of these people...)

Interesting you say that. As I watched the last few episodes of the last series, I got the impression the Nuckie we had seen thus far could have been a veneer (perhaps unfair, not a veneer but the person he could be when things were 'easy'), and his real (deeper) dimensions could be seen as his situation became more precipitous. The last lines he speaks to Jimmy are, "you never knew me James. I'm not you, I'm not looking for redemption."
We do see the agony of Jimmy as he makes decision throughout S2, we rarely if at all see Nuckie's agonising.
And once he took that step into taking a life himself, the tagline, 'you can't be half a gangster' becomes more apparent. Nuckie has enjoyed pulling strings at a distance controlling his empire, then he was forced to get entrenched and elbow deep in the work itself. Once one foot was in, you can't stay that way, you either get out or step in.
I think looking back over previous series this is a masterfully written programme.

Just checking, is this the one where someone says "vagina"? If so then yes, I am too. And I didn't see Nucky shooting the kid coming.

Yes, that's the one yes

the bit at the end where he shot the kid was BRILLIANT. We'd spent the whole episode thinking that he's going to employ him, that he's going to maybe 'train him up' and become the new Jimmy, that maybe this is the softer side of Nucky coming through again, that he likes this cheeky chappy and he's going to let him get away with stealing from him. Then, POW! You then see that look in Nucky's eye of "I don't take st from anyone". Brilliant.

It was kind of obvious that Nucky would kill the kid. They built him up as a really likeable character, they made you root for him. So him getting a bullet to the head was the obvious conclusion, especially given how much of a Nucky has become

Yep, this thread could go the way of the Walking Dead, Big Bang Theory etc etc where you've got a small number of downloaders chatting away about episodes most posters won't have seen and it's difficult to work out which camp people are in without hitting the spoiler tags.

fun times... rolleyes

A spoiler tag means it will spoil part of the plot for you. Stick with that, you won't go wrong.
