100 inch tv advice

Not exactly an impulse purchase but to be used for occasional use watching the odd Sky / Netflix movie or a few hours a week playing on the XBox. Totally realise it's a bit of a first world issue but help would be appreciated. It's for an upstairs games room which is well set up for something this size (current tv on that wall is 86 inch and man-maths means I've got somewhere else for that to go so it's not as daft as it seems)

Saw this 100 inch Hisense QLED tv in town in Currys for £1999. First thought was that it was cheaper than I'd expected something of that size to be and looked good.

Went into my more local tv retailer and was directed to this Samsung 98 inch telly which was a bit dearer at £2999.

Budget probably covers either of them but the various specs go over my head a bit and to my simple mind they look "similar" enough and I can't see where the extra £1000 comes from in the Samsung one. On the wall I'm not sure if I'd notice any difference .... but would I?

For context we mainly watch telly on a 65 inch OLED and this really is a mancave type treat

I'm no longer in the hifi business, but when I was motion was not great on the Hisense TV - that may have improved by now.

Watch them both for a while and check for pixelation/break-up on fast motion - usually most obvious on panning shots.

Check the warranty as well.

Also your wall/fixings need to be checked since they both weigh 60kg - a current 85inch Samsung is 32 kg, yours may be a bit heavier.

I've probably heard of Samsung more than Hisense and the warranty is 5 years compared to 2 years. In saying that, I can't remember ever having a tv fail and even my very old 60 inch plasma telly from 2009ish (now relegated to the garage and more of a heat source than anything else) is still going strong. Reviews of the Samsung one seem ok. Good point re the wall bracket. I'm sure I got a generic bracket based on the size of the 86 inch one rather than the actual weight of it so I may need to beef that up. Fortunately I had the wall installed in wood to allow me to hang anything from it. I'm probably talking myself into the Samsung one I guess.

It's a man-cave thing so I think being a bit OTT is ok and 100 inch is only 15% bigger than what's there anyhow.

I actually looked at something similar 2 years ago but came down on the side of the 86 inch tv but only because I couldn't find anywhere to give me a demo or let me see one working. In retrospect it might have been something I should have kept looking at.

Sound here will just be the soundbar I think. There's a multi-speaker system in the ceiling and back walls (it was part of the original house build) but I don't know how it all connects up. Maybe I should have a look.

I'm a fan and convert to how good oled is and don't mind a bit of budget-creep but £15k or upwards for a comparable 100 inch oled telly might get me into trouble so happy for the compromise for the odd movie or Call of Duty game. Everything is a bit of a compromise after moving house having previously had the luxury of a dedicated room with proper surround sound, 3D HD projection and a 4m wide screen.

I'll investigate the heavier duty wall brackets tomorrow and go from there.

Edit. I've actually found the paperwork for the existing mount and it says it's suitable for up to 100 inch and up to 100kg so that's a bonus.

If it bothers you, just a reminder that most Samsung's if not all, do not do Dolby Vision - might be worth checking the spec sheet.

No Samsung has Dolby Vision but in no way should that be a deal breaker on its own.

Quite agree Dicky - just making sure that the OP is aware having forked out a fair amount for the upgrade

Oh well, a couple of weeks later and the deed was done today with the Samsung QLED now on the wall. A bonus is that it feels like I've upgraded the tv up in the summerhouse to an 86 inch one for free. Man-maths at its best methinks.

Have to say, it is noticeably bigger than the 86 inch that was there before, which is a bit of a relief. It also sits slightly lower on the wall. Whether I'll actually notice any difference in picture quality might take a bit longer to suss out but so far so good.

For now it’s the same Denon sound bar and bass speaker that I was using previously. Again, I’m not an audio geek and only bought it by following a thread on PH a couple of years ago when it was recommended by someone who did seem to be an audio geek. To my ear, it’s great.

At some point I may stick my head up into the small
Attic and see what the inbuilt 5.1 system in the ceiling does but for the couple of hrs a week the telly will be on I’m happy for now with the soundbar.

I wouldn't bother about the in ceilings.
To me they're too close together to give decent Left/Centre/Right effects and I also suspect they fire straight down rather than at an angle which they really should do if you want a decent sounding system.

Thanks, I think I'll take that advice.
There's a central media cupboard in the main part of the house and speakers built in to the ceilings of a number of public rooms and a few bedrooms with wall panels to control the music around the house. It's fine for background music but a bit tinny in sound. I found a button in there that lets me add the games room ceiling to the group and it's equally tinny up there as well. It would probably be easy enough to upgrade to a better system and speakers as all the gubbins seem to be in place but hey, all I ever do is listen to Radio 2 so I'm happy enough

My dad bought a 4:3 Sony CRT TV which would have been around 26in in the late 80's to 1990. I remember mates coming round in awe of how big it was.

When I was at school, the coolest thing to have was the smallest portable telly for your bedroom. I'm sure I remember 2 inch screens with built in AM / LW radios

This was what we had at the last house. TV was a 60 inch plasma and you can see the difference with the projector image superimposed over that when the screen dropped. Certainly made killing people on Call of Duty a bit easier

I'm loving both the 100 inch new tv as a games room special event type thing and also the relocated 86 inch telly in the summer house as a general telly. However, we have a lot of rooms and there's a lot of space but even I'd concede that the 86 inch tv dominates the 6m x 5m summer house in a way that probably wouldn't be ideal in a normal room that had to function as a general room.

I previously found a dedicated cinema room with 4m screen and projector set-up to to awesome for one-off things but really wouldn't want a projector as my main viewing. Unless you are up to that sort of scale of things then the big telly is just so much easier and simpler to live with.
