Why the edit/dramatic shortening of your post?
Wanted to edit a piece, accidently deleted it, havent had time to repost it ....Basically it read:
I got a deal I couldn't refuse.
I am stocky with a shaved head and a beard so can cope with the 'its a girls car jibes', but only just as I'm not a Company Director so don't have balls of steel.
It joins a long line of distinguished feminine cars ranging from a 140 BHP Celica to a Merc 230SLK so I know my mates will ridicule me ....
If i get this right I can enjoy it for a year virtually free
And I know it has Tan leather, I will wear shades ..... even at night .....

Tan leather is fine. Specially in a Boxster.
Savannah (sp?) on the other hand....
Hope so, either way the purchase was a bit of an experiemnt to see if I can get back into and on with a manual car due to my knee issues, if its doesnt workout for me, will sell and break even, all being well ...Savannah (sp?) on the other hand....
Haven't even seen the car yet !!! Collect it Saturday ....

Good for you dibbles! I had a 1998/S 2.5 for many years (4 or 5) and it was brilliant brilliant brilliant!
On track days I used to keep up with a friend in a 996 C4S (3.6L) due to cornering ability, so ignore the bull about engine size it's a great car. Even though I eventually succumbed and swapped to a 996 myself there's still plenty of times when I think fondly on my 986
BTW, regarding your comment about free motoring, in all my years with it the only thing I had to pay out for that wasn't standard stuff like tyres / pads / servicing (which is so cheap at an Indie!) was a clutch, but at 70/80k on the original I didn't even mind that. Enjoy!
cheers, and thansk for the insight, just what i wanted to hear .... I was thinking about a 996 but this came up and allows me to try at minimal risk of a big loss a Paorsche, and a manual again, if it doesnt work out for me I'll sell it in 3-4 months and go back to autos ..... if it does work, the car world becomes my oyster again ....On track days I used to keep up with a friend in a 996 C4S (3.6L) due to cornering ability, so ignore the bull about engine size it's a great car. To tell truth, I think there's very few things things behind my switch to a 996 - to scratch the phenomenon of "the 911 itch", to get a glass rear screen (hard top) for winter (but how big a hardship is it really?) and to have the +2 seats for occasional use. Against that, the Boxster has two big boots (my 996 is a C4 so the one I do have is half full of 4x4 gubbins), handles better... I really don't feel there's too much between them and would recommend a Boxster all day long. Have a blast!
thats fairly honest, if this works out and I can handle a manual then a 996 will be next, then again, if not I'll get a 996 tip ....MogulBoy said:
Nothing wrong with 2.5's of course but the early 2.7's offer a number of improvements with the E-gas throttle and the optional PSM being possibly the most notable.
The trim is generally nicer on the later cars (more soft touch bits and fewer shiny buttons) and the hood has a liner.
It's a dangerous game though as mechanical worries aside, there are so many incremental improvements each year (2002's had a nicer matrix display and electic trunk buttons!, 2003's have the glovebox and glass window etc.) that you can quickly talk yourself into buying the 2013 model.
I wouldn't get too excited about the lower weight of the early cars thoughas the difference can't be much. Just remember the PH Boxster mantra: Don't waste money replacing the ambers and always run the smallest wheels that you can live with aesthetically!
My top tip for early Boxster heaven is to run it without the (optional in the early days) lower centre console: GT3 style. Less weight(!) and that old school look and replace the front engine mount (if it hasn't already been done).
lol, cheers for the advice, if I keep itthe only thing i wouldlike is the glass rear screen ....The trim is generally nicer on the later cars (more soft touch bits and fewer shiny buttons) and the hood has a liner.

its on 17's so thats fine already, as for the rest, not too fussed, it has a 6 CD Changer so thats all I need ...

Glass rear screen is a very worthwhile upgrade (though not cheap if you're on a budget).
The main reason being that you don't have to get out of the car and crease the window when you lower the roof which is a real pain in the arse!!!
As well as freshening up the look of the car, it also has a heated window which is great and plugs into the hardtop socket, so uses the existing button on the dash.
I went down this route when my plastic window cold cracked whilst using it in the winter. I had one fitted by a place in Bournemouth who were great and used one of these hoods from BAS international http://www.car-hood.co.uk/
Quality was as good as OEM in my opinion.
Cheers, £550 doesnt seem too bad and the rear window on mine I have been told has gone slightly milky in one corner, also I heard about the hood 'chop' when opening, sounds like a pain !!!!The main reason being that you don't have to get out of the car and crease the window when you lower the roof which is a real pain in the arse!!!

I find it literally staggering you can get so much car for way less than £10k! As long as you're sure it's not cheap for a reason (real potential for false economies with buying porkies!) it'll be a blast. When buying my 996 I called plenty of official and indie garages asking if they'd take a look at various (private) cars for me, if brought to them, and in the end my usual indie (Northway in Reading) charged only something like £100 for an hour or two's inspection (including up on a ramp and a test drive). You get no recourse as such, except I believed they wouldn't risk their own reputation by letting you buy a pup, and these guys know what to look for after seeing hundreds of the things every year!
(amateur mistake when I bought my Boxster - Peter Morgan seemed too pricey so I got the RAC in to inspect it. They didn't even drive it - "there was a nail in the tyre, health and safety..." and their helpful comments included "cigarette lighter not working properly" )
Mines been well checked over, so fingers crossed its a good'un, finally get to see it on Saturday .... Well played.
Was off line most of yesterday and so didn't get a chance to see this.
1. The Boxster chop - only required on cold days. Otherwise just watch through the rear view and you'll see if you are going to need it. Over 10degC though and you'll never need to IME, although would might want to.
2. Rads and front wishbones - if one goes and you can afford to do the other at the same time as it will follow as sure as night does day.
3. If you have one without the lower console praise the lord. With my size it made it so much nicer to be able to 'spread' my legs a bit more. Added to which it makes entering via the passenger door when some comedy fkwit has parked within a mm of the drivers side much easier. I also preferred the look, but that's me.
4. Have you got A/c? if so it will demist very quickly.
5. Don't bother with a glass rear window unless it already has one - for reasons stated by others.
6. In winter ALWAYS carry an old credit card with you. If the window seal freezes to the window the only way to free it without hair driers and the like is to use one of these. The window will bend enough to allow you to open and close it without 'dropping' but if you have an ounce of mechanical sympathy it hurts and the closing part requires opening the roof a little if you are inside the car and the worries that brings with the PAX door and frozen rear screen.
7. Mine had 17"s and I can only imagine how puny 16" would look. Be careful with the front springs as some owners have cut these to make the front look lower and meaner - MOT failure if spotted.
8. RMS - get a new one with every clutch change unless you see a pool of black under the car one day. A drip is nothing (they all do that sir), a drizzle is a problem.
9. IMS - forget about it, if it is going to happen it will and nothing any of us says will influence it.
10. At some point you most likely be blanked by some feckwit in a V reg 996C2 with 11billion miles who deems your car beneath them and another day you'll end up talking to the owner of a GT2RS all night long about your mutual love of cars as he compares his to the 599GTO he got last week. Get over it and the 1001 cleaver sodds who will tell you that it is a hairdressers car, is too slow. They bug you but worse is the one who says nothing but talks behind your back about how flash you are in your £20k sports car. Seriously I lost count for the number of times I was called a flash or similar by people driving cars that were worth 2,3 and 4 times mine in the trade.
excellent reply, thanks, and to comment on a few ....Was off line most of yesterday and so didn't get a chance to see this.

Yes it has AC No idea about the lower console. not seen the car yet, see it tomorrow when i collect it, it does have the 17's, in regards the other bits, all good info and its been well checked over so hoping all will be ok ...
Will get some pics up when i finally get my hands on the car ....
OK, I've collected Bluebell, and here she is ......... very enjoyable drive in via the local B roads today to the office, seems very composed and on the 17's not at all crashy ..... so far me likes, now just need to see if the clutch aggravates my knee or whether I am back into a manual comfortably ....
Mogul, I quite like it in black, its almost invisible against the blue pain, would have removed it if it had been silver / chrome ....
Rude-Boy, no plans to make any changes, I like her as she is, and she is a trial car as a manual before I decide long term whether I go down the auto route due to knee troubles ....

The centre console delete is pretty simple if you wanted to go down that route later. Just involves removing the said parts and fitting a few simple blanking panels and possibly relocating a couple of switches (readily available as a kit). Let me know if you want details when you get the car. It will more than likely still have the console in place as I don't think many owners actually do this.
UK, centre console delete details would be nice as currently I'm bashing the outside of my left shin against it, no switches in mine just 6 CD slots and dont need those ......Enjoy shopping, have to say two weeks in and I'm really enjoying the car, outstanding value for money and apart from discovering the cd changer was broken it's proving to be a real joy and I'm getting no grief from my knee so that's a good sign as well.
It handles beautifully although was a tad twitchy through the lanes to work yesterday at -7 but that's forgivable.
Also fitted a new headunit with bluetooth and a usb port to make it easier to call mates and listen to tunes.
Speakers are rubbish though. Only dashboard ones, none in the doors......
That's it thus far.......
