I've just had a VERY enjoyable test drive in an R8 V10 spider, now my budget of circa 65k would also put me into the territory of the earlier Gallardos (Top Gear for instance have a nice black 2006 model at 64k). But forgetting the Lambo supercar tag/vs mass produced Audi and taking each on it's individual merits how much difference is there between them in the real world in terms of driving, ownership costs, reliability etc? If the Lambo was going to cost 3 times the price to run then I think the R8 would be better for me but are they essentially the same or is it just the engine? If not what are the main differences and downsides to the G in terms of extra expense/potential unreliability?
Appreciate this is likely asked a lot but the search on here is pants smile

Thanks all for your inputs. I agree with the comments around depreciation, the G will be pretty safe in terms of risk of losing money.
The main instigator for my move from the TVR is that I want a car thats fun, quick, ballsy when I want but at the same time something my wife will feel comfortable driving - she likes to have fun but I'm not sure how she'd like a car she'd feel on edge driving (she won't drive the TVR and that means weekends away are done in her car rather than mine).
I test drove the V8 R8 last week and I liked it, a lot, but on reflection it didn't have 'that' special feel that I need to make ownership something enjoyable - the V10 I feel may be a great compromise between the 2. Think I may need to try the G along with my wife to see if it's something we would both be comfortable and happy with - needs to be dual purpose almost like Jeckyl and Hyde to satisfy both types of requirements.
Other option is a 360/430 but I'm just not sure they're a car I could love.... Decisions decisions smile

Unless I've missed something, £65k won't get you a V10 Spyder! The cheapest out there are 2 40,000 mile cars at £70k and those aren't necessarily the best places to put your money, realistically it would be mid £70s at least to get a good one.

(I've just done this and I LOVE it!)
Wasn't necessarily the spider but the V10 which is in at 65, just so happened that the car I drove yesterday was a spider smile

Owned both,r8 useable as daily drive, had mine for 3 years ,cost me £400 for a service and a few hundred for a pair of tyres ..and that was it.
Had gallardo for about 18 months ,was an 06 Spyder ,cost me about 4-5 k in servicing ,
Gallardo is much more of event and just more ferocious ,but very tiring to drive ,ride is very hard .
If you get gallardo you will need another car, with r8 you won't.
And that kind of makes my mind up for me smile - thankyou!
I need a car thats a bit of both - normal when I want it and sports when I feel the need. If it were just for me then I'd be happy with hardcore, but I want it to be enjoyed by my wife & I as an only car for me (she has her own). I think if I got the G then I'd be in the same position as I am now with the TVR (albeit a bigger grin factor with the Lambo) owning a car she doesnt really want to go in or drive. I know I'll regret this but looks like the R8 it is - just to decide now on V10 or tuned V8.
Thanks all for your help and advice!!

Agree Gallardos are more intense than a 430 in feel for sure. A close friend bought a 430 that he came with me to see which replaced his Gallardo, only had it a short while and went back to another Gallardo. He found the 430 to easy to drive smile

Tony aka Zippee, sure an R8 will be a great all round choice. Drove a v8 a few years back and only discounted buying it as it was to wide for me to get out off when in my single garage frown Exhaust change helps an R8 really come to life as a little muted as standard.

You sure you gonna be able to let the snap crackle and pop TVR go?
Hi Pete - I hope you are well? You're in a 430 now then I take it? You change cars almost as much as my wife buys new shoes smile
Letting the TVR go will be very hard, especially as it'll be replaced with something so different (Gallardo for example would have been a much easier decision) but needs must and all that.
Saying that, it's a very slow market at present so it won't be too much of a hardship to continue driving her till the time comes smile

Just to bring this thread up from the dead once more - do any of you guys complete running cost blogs in the 'my garage' section of PH?
Having recently spoken to a couple of Gallardo owners recently my mind keeps swinging back to thoughts of potential ownership (despite my rather contradictory comments above) - I've told the wife it's 'just' an Italian R8 though we'd need to find one she can try. In the meantime it would help greatly to try and see some real world running costs, I know for all cars you hear horror stories of 'x' happening and costing thousands but realistically how often does it? What are the average decent Indie service costs? I'm not unrealistic in the fact these are not going to be cheap to run but at the same time I don't want to be hit with a 5k bill every year come service time.
