Alfa 156 sportwagon

As it is the new year we have decided that the shopping saab has to go. On of the cars on the list is a 156 sportwagon (or whatever they are called).
I think we will have about £8k to spend what are we likely to get for the money? Anything we should look out for?

Anyone flogging one for the money?

Any opinion on the different engines? 1.8, 2.0 JTD ?
Does the 1.8 have much less power than the 2.0?

I have had a chat with the bank, and now know what the Saab will be worth on a trade in so I have a much better idea of what we might spend.

Current thinking is to leave it until April/May time (we are about to have our house knocked about a bit so some reserve cash is a good idea) then hopefully spend a bit more and get a newer car.

We did look at a march 2001 2.5 V6 with 35k on the clock, it was up for £9995. Red, leather etc, etc. I like it, the wife likes it so now all we have to do is wait and see if we can find the right car at the right price. I do think it will be a 2.0 or a JTD

Does anyone have anylinks to what sort of kit the 2000/2001 range came with?

I'm tempted with a Veloce as the ride is supposedly a bit more fun, however I need air con, CD and so need to know what came as standard..

What is the difference (apart from the ride) betweena lusso and a Veloce?

I notice that superchips think they can get another 35bhp out of the 2.4 td motor, has anyone tried it?

Roof bars...do you need them ( I know they look nice )?

So I'm really looking for a 2002 model..

Interesting Virgin are offering them with delivery miles for a little over £15k, that is the lusso though, and of course I'm not in the market for one just yet It does give me a good idea of what I should be paying for a nearly new one though.

In fact I'm tempted with an import, run it for a year then sell it on, what do you reckon I'd lose in a year with about £10k miles...

I think this might be the route I take, I'm on pretty good terms with a garage which deals in second hand kit (although not fiats and alfas) so I might go along with the bloke from there to ensure I don't get fleeced.

That 2001 jtd, was it a saloon or sportwagon?

I've just been into the local alfa dealer (priory Cambridge) who say they are getting a Y reg 01 plate 2.4 veloce in on friday. full leather and climate 36k miles. They want £10995 for it. I mentioned I was really looking for a 02 model car as that is when the spec change, the saleswoman told me that the only change was to the console and it happened in 01. I thought there were a lot more changes than that, to traction control damping etc, etc...

Anyone care to comment?

Just taken it out. What an excellent car. Great engine, probably the least oil burnering sounding TD I have ever driven.

However they are not interested in doing a deal so I will be looking elsewhere..

I agree, it looks like we are going to have to wait. To be honest I would hope that by spending £11k we could get the car we really want whic would be an 02 and not red Do we think there might be more about after April?
