Volkswagen Beetle R Mooted

Hot Beetle could be on the cards for Frankfurt. Maybe

A hot Volkswagen Beetle R could be presented to the world as soon as the Frankfurt motor show this September, according to US mag Car & Driver.

Apparently, the Beetle R will get front-wheel drive, much like the Scirocco R. It is expected to be a little down on power compared with the Scirocco R, however, with a 237bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot playing the Scirocco's 261bhp.

That is, however, a significant jump over the 197bhp 2.0 TFSI motor in the Beetle Turbo, which is the fastest Beetle motor for now (and features in the US-only Volkswagen Beetle Black Turbo Launch Edition that you see in the picture).

C&D also surmises that a convertible Beetle R is a possibility, but points out that VW is as yet unsure whether or not there is a market for a car of this sort...

...looks like a chubby 911, or should that be a porky 911. Maybe better calling it a VW Porker

Doesn't seem like such a great idea- I mean no one bought the last 'hot' beetle.

Given that one of the selling points of the new beetle is that it comes with a lovely flower in the dashboard I very much doubt any of the owners are remotely interested in going fast or spending money on fuel..

An 'R' model will not temp hot hatch or coupe buyers into a car thats about as cool as James May's hair.

Also I think the list price of the Beetle RSi was around £50k (IIRC) so that would have put off a lot of buyers.

Hateful thing, putting a big engine in it at least means I won't have to look at it so for long.

Oi, I bought one!

The RSi was built for racing homologation of the Beetle Cup car (VW Cup), this on the other hand just further devalues the VW R brand.

Can't see it selling very well myself...

Now, if they'd used the TT RS V5 lump and 4 wheel drive system on the other hand, they might of had me as a customer.

Sticking to the RSi for now thanks!

Edit to add - the car in the picture is mine! smile

Wy all these utterly st wheels on these hot VWs? Dreadful things!

Why not some nice BBS style rims like the Ed 30 had, loads of classic BBS shapes would look super hot on that.
Those look like ebay Khan rip offs
