Spotted: 2005 Maybach 57

...or save 30 grand and get a newer S65 AMG? Choices, choices...

My stepfather came back from a trip to New York on the QE2 in 2002 and, aware of my love of cars, he eagerly handed me some sales literature (which I still have) and some photos he took of a car which had travelled to the States on the deck of the ship.

He told me about how the PR people who travelled with it were gleefully proclaiming that it would be the last word in luxury motoring, but all I could think was that the Maybach (for that is what it was) looked like a mildly remodelled S-Class Mercedes.

Perhaps that's a bit harsh, but there's no denying that, at the very least, this new uber-wafter bore more than a passing resemblance to a car which cost a lot less to buy, and which wasn't exactly lacking in luxury appointments itself. The Maybach had its fans, but generally opinion tended to be that it seemed to lack presence and was perhaps an example of parts-bin engineering.

Nobody who's travelled in the back of one has any complaints - far from it - but if you had the choice of being picked-up or dropped-off at one of those posh 'dos' where they pile up the Ferrero Rocher, would you rather be in a Maybach or a Rolls-Royce?

This 2005 Maybach from our classifieds is up for £90k and is one of the shorter-wheelbase '57' models. It is of course also loaded to the roof-lining with goodies and shows a full dealer service history. Meanwhile there's also plenty of smooth power and torque to propel you along as you ponder the stock market.

Then again this S65, also from our classifieds, bears a remarkable resemblance to the 'Bach, is supremely equipped, and has more than enough performance. It's also built in Stuttgart, has a full history, is one year newer than the Maybach, and will cost you something in the region of 30 grand less.

The Merc has covered more miles, but at thirty grand less you might be tempted. But if an AMG Benz isn't your thing and you really must have top-end opulence, how about this 24,000-mile Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph for similar money?

If you had to sit in the back and let someone else do the driving, which would you go for?

I think I'm right in saying that for those who really need a genuinely capable and utterly comfortable mobile office and status symbol there's no equal to a LWB Maybach?

Out of all the cars to be ferried around in I think I'd choose the Maybach too. But it makes far less sense in short wheel base form and if you're not going to do anything productive in there you may as well fall asleep in the back of an S class or Phantom.

The Maybach should have been designed to look more than just an S Class that had been hit by an ugly stick. I'm sure it's a lovely place to be, but if it had looked more impressive, it would no doubt have sold more.

I travelled to Goodwood in the rear of a fully optioned S Class this year, and the traffic was jammed from the M25 onwards. I didn't care - the tennis was on.

Having just read the specs, what extra does the Maybach offer? confused

If you're counting the pennies (ie. you have an actual budget to stick to!) then you're right, the S Class does offer the best value over the SWB Maybach in this article.

But if you were given free reign over the finances then the Maybach 'should' offer a whole lot more. What exactly I don't know. But apart from some ridiculous levels of tech, I think the majority of the 'whole lot more' will be in aesthetics. The sort of thing that's difficult to quantify and appreciate on here unless you actually sit in a fully optioned one. You'll probably get that 'ahh...I see what all the fuss is about now..' feeling.

Hi,

I really like the Maybach and have been in a couple aswell. They are supremly comfy and at speed whisper quiet. It looks too much like the S Class, Although that is what Maybach wanted when creating the car.

Maybach wanted something great inside and then to make it as normal on the outside. It wasn't ever going to be as flashy as the Phantom. The inside is where they went to town and you have everything you could ever want.

That was a great car and achievement back in 2002 but the times have caught up and a Merc S Class will achieve most if not everything the Maybach does. I wouldn't buy one as I think a new shape S Class provides what you need at a lower price. I still think for the price it is still good considering what you get.. Would I buy one over a Phantom?? Tough call...

I can just about see the argument in favour of a LWB 62 Maybach over an S Class. Fully reclining rear seat accommodation without recourse to using the front passenger seat would be grand, but the 57 is a lot extra to pay for just an iconic badge.

The maybach in my mind is "discreet" luxury compared to the Rolls Royce Phantom, and if it was my money I would be buying a Phantom.

I do feel tho that cheap arnages were missed from the artice

I think the 57 Maybach will look even more pointless when the all new S Class is released, which I believe is next year? And if they produce an even longer LWB model for China you could see Maybach-esque dimensions in the rear.

I'm not really a fan of either, but as the S65 is similarly equipped and similarly sized AND has the sledgehammer performance too at 30 grand less, it has to be a no-brainer surely?

To my eyes the Mayback is like having the most luxurious, spacious and well appointed 10 bedroom mansion built in the middle of Brixton. Sure, once inside it looks very nice. But it is fundimentally flawed.

The Mayback is a 1st class seat once inside, bit from the outside looks like a Hyundai knock-off.

Mercs / BMWs / Audis are too clinical and far too common.

If money was no option, and I wanted style with the package, only a Bentley or RR will do!

It's the Seraph for me. Definitely the classiest of the three, though the interior of the Maybach is pretty inviting!

I would reckon on that Maybach being at least 10k too expensive and possibly 20k. There is no way I would pay 90k for that. They are already being used as taxis on the streets of Moscow.

I agree on the first point, but the latter.

Iirc the W221 is about 5m, or 5,2m for the LWB.
The maybach gives it away with the model no., so 5,7m for the SWB and 6,2m for the LWB. I doubt the merc will come close.

Even from that angle, the Maybach is just the same "step up" from the E-class to the S-class, extra lenght, extra luxury,...

Also, as said, the big difference between the Phantom and the Maybach is the form of it's luxury. The maybach isn't "shouty" at all, it is very discreet (although it can't hide it's huge dimensions), while the big grill on the RR just shouts "MONEY".

I'd have a hard time chosing if I had to pick, although I won't be lucky enough to be in that position.

I think if I was being wafted from expensive 5* hotel to airport first class lounge I'd ask to be whisked in a Phantom, as awesome as the Maybach is, it doesn't quite tick the right "Presence" boxes for me.

Let the flaming begin smile

I often find hip-hop music tends to provide useful indicators as to the popularity of luxury vehicles; and in this regard the Maybach's popularity remains undiminished.

Hip-hop kingpin Jay-Z has been exalting the German luxury vehicle as far back as 2003, when he casually mentions "Hop that ass out that S-Class/Lay back in that Maybach, roll the best grass".

Pretty soon it was owned by a number of his contemporaries, including his label signing Rick Ross in 2006. The Miami rapper was so taken with the vehicle that he created a tribute song "Maybach Music" in 2008, featuring none other than his boss Jay-Z. It was the latter who gave most fulsome praise in the song for "the partition roof, translucent and humidor".

And Rick Ross didn't stop there; two more sequels to "Maybach Music" have been released, while the rapper has named his entire record label "Maybach Music Group" after the vehicle.

Whether this is a good indication or not of how the vehicle is viewed in the real world, lord only knows smile
