Video: Viper ACR's Rapid 'Ring Time
Ride on board a Dodge Viper ACR for a 7m 12s Nordschleife run
Dodge has released an official video of its latest Nurburgring record that is, er, not a record (because there is no such thing), confirming our recent story that Dodge had taken a 2010 Viper ACR around the Nordschleife in 7mins 12secs.
"We're extremely proud to set the lap record (It's not a record! - Ed) for a second time at the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife," said Dodge boss Ralph Gilles. "Our team returned to Germany knowing we'd left some time on the track when we set our first lap record, so this effort shows the incredible depth and capability the Viper ACR has by running a full 10 seconds faster than we did in 2008."
In fairness to Mr Gilles and the Dodge crew, it is a pretty impressive time. So should we mention that it's still a good fourteen seconds off the time set by the Radical SR8LM back in 2009? Nah, probably not...
Discussion
I still find it hard to really raise much of an eyebrow to these records. When it was things like the Skylines, NSX and Porsches you knew they were proper roadcars that were focused on performance in an every-day guise.
The Viper, Radical and I suppose to a large degree the GT2 and GT3 911's are just setting records for the fastest track focused car with a tax disc going around a track that looks like a road.
Great cars and while I can bow to their technical achievements, I have zero connection with them because they just aren't roadcars to me in the traditional sense.
Out of interest, if I wanted to spend 40k on a car with 4 usable seats, with a roof and all mod-cons, what would be the fastest around the ring?

Well done to Viper! Faster than the LFA Nurburgring Edition but still slower than the Radical.
It would be interesting to see whether the Mosler Photon could get closer to the Radical time, especially if the BHP/tonne were made similar. There would possibly be some reason for it to be banned if it did though!

Ring 'records' are getting pretty ridiculous these days. It's going to be fun to see manufacturers come up with the criteria for which their car is the fastest.
How long before we see a company saying they set the record for a 3-wheel-drive car wth 4 seats, a front mounted V7 engine with more than 153 cars produced?
By all means, set aa time in a car, but if it's not the fastest then don't try and say that it is.

Come on PH, lets have some consistency in reporting other than the clarkson'esq American car bashing, in the PH news report for the LFA it was a record that Lexus took and the gumpert and Radical were dissed with "but since these are two Radicals and a Gumpert Apollo, they can hardly count as everyday road cars" yet now the viper has taken it back they are now in play as if they are regularly used and available vehicles that qualify. Most of the world has agreed that they aren't really genuine production cars.

Cadillac CTS-V I would imagine the "next best thing" is a VXR8 suitably blown and modified or an M5.

It's a little known car here but the 2004-2009 Cadillac CTS-V was also a useful tol packing the Corvette C5 Z06s 400hp LS6 V8 and a manual box.
It won't be anything like as fast as the 2009 and sadly, these also keep their value in the US where cars just don't depreciate the way they do here - and that's why I have never imported one - because the Vauxhalls work out cheaper.
A few went to Germany but their taxes don't favour them so they are rare there too.
