Today's POTW features three undeniably super super-saloons, but which is the, er, super-est? Well, according to our chums over on Autocar magazine, they reckon it ain't the new M5.

Which, as far s super-saloon group tests go, rather re-writes the form book. In fact, we reckon that the giving of the nod to the E63 AMG (now with 5.5-litre twin-turbo power, remember, just like the M5), is quite an historic victory for the big Merc, no matter how slender the margin - and it is a skin-of-teeth type victory.

As for the Jaguar? Well, it comes in third place but is by no means disgraced (and quite right, too).

But as well as a no-doubt controversial verdict, the group test in this week's issue of Autocar also allows us to present you with this rather pretty picture. The Jag for its looks, the AMG for its NA motor and the BM because its an M5 and the power. I dont think I could split these enough to choose just one.

I agree. V.cheesy. Speaking of which, anyone remember the old 80s framed pics of a Testarossa on a tron-like red grid background? Think they did a 959 as well and sold them in places like B&Q. Now there's a POTW.

Yep I remember those. Were used on various 'Supercars' calenders too IIRC.

I havent driven the new m5,nor the xfr but i have drven the xkr extensively and the e63 extensively and trust me ,if cars did have souls the e63 definitely has one.

Gotta feel sorry for BM....

E60 M5 = lairy V10 that car hacks declare is amazing for that 1 day of the year and not good enough the other 364........................

So

F10 M5 = Brilliant (Better than the merc indeed) 364 days of the year but we want it to be brilliant on the special 1 day!

Cant really win can they!

Side point: Can't wait for the M6 to come as its apparently 15% more focussed in every area than the M5. Should be a corker

Oh - and my e28 M5 is perfect what ever day it is! Can't beat the daddy!

The Jag looks stunning against both the Merc & BMW. I'm sure the BMW has sublime handling but the Jag really does look good.

Agree but really cant stand the jags new face lifted daylight LEDs - way too big!

It took me a while to get to like the looks of the XF, and just when I did they updated it.

The look of the new XF front and rear lights are a step backwards in my eyes. They've managed to make it look less modern somehow

He maybe sometime, he's probably online looking at some Haynes manuals, to find where they put the soul....
