2008 (58) BMW 520d M Sport
Discussion
I am going looking at one of these today as my new company hack.
I've got a couple of questions:
- Real world MPG? I commute 100 miles a day so I would like to get 50+ on the motorway at 70mph. Is this possible? Book figures say 60mpg.
- Sat Nav worth having? The only option this car has missing by the looks of it is the Sat Nav. I prefer using a standalone TomTom normally anyway.
- Run Flats - should they be ditched?
- I am only 24, will I look like an old man?
Thanks,
Matt.

This explains the differences pre/post facelift:

A 2008 would be the facelift model and efficient dynamics too.
Run flats seem to cause lots of road noise, the problem with ditching them is obviously what to do in case of a puncture. Some people carry a can of tyre foam, but this won't help with a cut in the tyre. There may be insurance implications if you were to ditch the runflats.

I ran an '08 520d Msport auto for 100k miles, during that time the mpg never changed from 44.8, my 730d did 38.4 over the same commute which was a mixture of fast a road and slow traffic or motorway. The E46 M3 does 29.4mpg but is a lot quicker!
I ran the 19" mixed wheels which are not run flats and in my opinion a better bet, Falken 452 are £130 a corner.
In the time I had it, it only had one fault but was a pain. It had a main loom plug failure and was out for a couple of weeks, when they recoded it they fried the radio and then it wouldn't recode. BMW Uk had to fix it, but they really looked after me and it was out of warranty. The car only needed servicing, tyres and fuel.
The car was great, one of the best.
The sat nav and phone was also very good, I used the connected drive and you can google an address and send it to the car.
It also had the USB which was great for long journeys, CD changer which never got used, heated seats (great) and full leather (great), 19's (great) and the phone/Nav (great)
Hope that helps
