I'm thinking of getting my first sports car, but I'm also looking for something that's relatively cheap (for a sports car) to insure, so probably around the current insurance group 25. Basically any cheap RWD 2 seater/coupe will do.

I've come up with so far:

192PS Mazda RX8 - Group 27
Gen1/2 Mazda MX5 - Group 23-26
Toyota MR2 - Group 27

But I haven't had much luck finding anything else, anyone else got any ideas?

Anything you can get on a classic policy.... I had my TVR S1 on a classic policy when I was 19/20 and it was only around £600....

Insurance groups aren't the be all and end all. I'm 22 and I just got a sub-£500 quote on my Caterham.

Problem with a classic policy is that I'd have to go as a named driver with a parent as the main driver as I wouldn't have a second car...do they even allow that?

How old are you? I had a classic policy on my own car when I was 20.

19...but I'm pretty sure you can only get classic car insurance if the car is not the only car you drive, is that correct?

NO INSURANCE COMPANIES ALLOW THIS - IT'S CALLED FRONTING AND IS INSURANCE FRAUD.

Sorry for shouting, but it's very important. Most insurance companies will allow a classic as the only car (Mine was my only car for a while and it wasn't a problem, even for commuting) but you'll have trouble finding a classic policy under 21 now, as they have tightened up on it a lot.

Tamora is less to insure than my MX5 ever was.

I am older now though.

Only way to find out is to get some quotes.

You'll have to start running quotes. My MR2 Turbo is group 20 (old system) and an import and yet the insurance on that was pretty cheap. Especially when you consider it's such a great sports car too. An MX5 is the obvious answer for a cheap to run, cheap to insure sports car but I prefer MR2s to be fair.

It wasn't true ten years ago. Might have changed though.

I never said I would be the main driver. It's only fronting if the policy holder rarely or never drives the car, which almost certainly wouldn't be the case as my father is a keen car nut as well.

I'm still not really getting any conclusive answers on whether it would be possible to be a named driver on classic car insurance, although if anyone knows any insurance firms that let you insure a classic when it's your only vehicle that would be much appreciated.

It actually doesn't make any difference who the policy holder is; "fronting" is simply where you lie about who will use the car most.

Lancaster were the last company I used to insure my MGB as an only car.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Lancaster currently only accept drivers 21 or over. Anyone else got any ideas?

19 years old, hey? You didn't post on here a few days ago about getting insurance on an R8 did you? hehe

As others have said, try specialist classic insurance companies. I currently drive a modded 5-litre Chimaera for £300/year, but I am 30. At 19, expect some high quotes!

I hope you find something decent. I would look at Mk1 MX5s!

I maybe slightly bias, but i recommend a non-turbo Mk2 MR2. The price of these have really come down recently, and you can pick up some real bargains.

As for insurance, they're very reasonable. I bought mine at 18 - first year of insurance was £1600, at 19 it was about £1100 and now i'm 20 it's £700. This is all with Admiral, with all modifications declared.
