Porsche Cayenne GTS unveiled

'Focused' and 'sporty' Cayenne revealed ahead of Beijing show debut

Porsche is once again combining one of its most sporty nomenclatures - GTS - with one of its least sporty cars - the Cayenne. The new Porsche Cayenne GTS is set to make its debut at the Beijing motor show in a couple of weeks.

Designed to sit between the 'basic' V8 Cayenne S and the full-house Turbo, the new GTS gets an uprated version of the naturally aspirated 4.8-litre V8 engine from the S, with 420hp (up from 400hp), channelled to all four wheels via an eight-speed Tiptronic ZF auto, the eccentric manual option from the previous GTS sadly long gone.

Porsche says the engine and gearbox have "each been tuned to deliver particularly sporting levels of responsiveness, with the consequence that the Cayenne GTS sprints from a standing start to 62mph in 5.7 seconds, reaching 100 mph in 13.3 seconds. The top speed is 162mph and the Combined fuel consumption on the NEDC is 26.4mpg." By way of perspective, that's 0.2 seconds quicker to 62mph than the S, and an extra 2mph piled onto the top speed. Everybody say 'oooohhhh!'.

Chassis tweaks include PASM active suspension, a ride height that's 24mm lower than in the S and a rather more nebulous suggestion that the suspension is "more tautly tuned".

Visual clues include Cayenne Turbo-esque front-end styling, gloss-black window surrounds and trims, side skirts, bigger wheel arches and a 'twin-wing' roof spoiler.

The Cayenne GTS will cost from £67,147 when it goes on UK sale in July 2012.

No doubt Cayenne drivers need that power for all those last minute motorway exits, where they cut across three lanes of traffic at the last possible moment without indicating.

It is not just Cayennes of course - the other frequent offenders are Range Rover Sports, Audi Q7s and BMW X6s.

I have become so used to this sort of behaviour from these vehicles that subconsciuosly I just think 'tw@t' every time I see one on the road and prepare for the inevitable evasive action that will be required.

if somebody other than Porsche would come up with this we'd all be laughing like mad. Strangely, the badge makes some people completely lose objectivity.

Still, it will sell well in its target market.

I'm starting to wonder if Posche are trying to make another 911. Build a horrificly compromised car and slowly make it good.

although I really like the look of the new cayenne in principle, it seems to have lost it's roadpresence and really "shrunk". I parked next to one the other day and it looked tiny compared to the wifes Q7.

Long may Porsche continue to sell these (and the Panamera) by the boat load; it means they can keep developing and building the GT3 and GT2 cars.

'Cash cow' they might be, but without them Porsche would not have the funds to invest in the development of the 'more exciting' Porsches and to continue to support the race program.

They are also very good cars if you want or need something of their ilk.

That is the only way this car could ever be justified.

My old boss had the first gen turbo 4.5 v8 with 450 bhp, in fact i sold it for him here on pistonheads - to a blonde Alderley Edge chesire WAG type. He bought it for £75k in 2004 and got £21k in 2009, ouch. Remember a meeting we went to in it, once you got the suspension in full on 'squat' mode it was devastatingly quick in a straight line, averaged about 15mpg, 100 litre tank.

The new versions are definitely an improvement but not my cup of tea. He chopped it in for a q7 4.2 tdi v8 which i had the pleasure of driving down to France for him. Now that was a beast.

I like it, if it's like the old model GTS it will sound epic.

Dont like the colour, but would have one in an instant otherwise.

You see plenty of them about over here in Dubai- I also think they look far better in the metal than in photos. What what mates have siad, they appear to be fairly bulletproof too, whcih is why he sold his woeful RR sport to get into one.

I suspect my house would probably look tiny compared to your wife's Q7, they're fking massive.

Don't like the colour, think black or blue etc would have suited it better. Power figures sound mental though.
