Do you answer them? I always assume that unknown/blocked number means it is coming from a call centre of dubious nature. Generally I am correct.

Personal phone I wouldn't answer a block number, it's probably a call centre. Work phone yes, because often numbers behind a switchboard don't show up.

Sorry, should have been clearer. I meant personal phone.

No.

If it's important they can leave a VM.

Why are people so frightened of saying "No thank you" and hanging up when a call centre rings?

You have to listen to them before you get a chance to speak. Not answering saves this time.

This!

I love how an unsolicited call can make somebody fear their own phone.

Remember those text competitions? The one on Fifth gear where you can win a car? They call from a blocked/unknown number, I know because I won one! If I was scared of my own phone I think they'd have moved on to the next number.

Not frightened I just CBA to waste 2-3 mins of my day telling them I dont want to claim for PPI or I dont want to go back to T Mobile, also a lot of the time with these they seem to be auto diallers as on the odd occasion I have answered them there is a long pause while the system realises it has a bite and connects an agent

If it is important they can leave me a VM, annoyingly my old dear has her number blocked by default but she now knows to leave me a quick VM and I call her back

I think Ofcom should force telcos to give a free option to decline all number withheld / number unavailable calls. That would immediately remove the assortment of cold calling scum and scammers I get pestered by.

You can generally tell within 5 seconds, surely? Personally, I find it more inconvenient to listen to a voicemail as people seem to suffer verbal diarrhoea when leaving a voice messages. It takes an age to get to the point and I still need to ring them back to discuss what I’ve just heard.

Seems strange to me. Just answer it and hang up if not applicable.

This is actually an option. I occationally have to call clients on their mobile from work, we can't display a number when calling out because it's a 'shared line' or something. You just get a message saying "this telephone cannot accept calls from this number" or the like.

Have to call them on my work mobile.

Personally I never answer my private mobile to withheld numbers. I certainly don't fear them, but I can't recall when a call from a unknown source was anything but someone trying to sell me something I didn't want.

To be frank, I rarely answer the phone to people I actually know after about 7pm.. Grumpy old git that I am.

I usually do, because for some reason our house number comes up as unknown, and calls from my Dad's office come up as unknown as well.

Not bothered by call centres, either wind them up or politely decline and hang up biggrin

If it's a call centre and I'm not busy, they get right royally wound up. I'll waste as much of their time as possible whilst extracting the piss from the foreigner on the other end.

Childish, but it amuses me.

It's not a case of being too frightened of your own phone to answer a withheld number, it's the fact that once you do the call centre on the other end know that they have a 'live' number that's worth keeping on their records and calling again. And again. And again.

Now registered with the TPS and thankfully only had one or two nuisance calls since.

If I get one there's a very good chance that it's work, so I tend to answer them if I feel like earning some overtime and not otherwise.

Yes - but judging by your name you clearly have the time for such antics!

I never answer withheld numbers, mostly because my Mother-in-Law's number is withheld and there's a high risk that it will be her.
