Chris Harris video: GT86 vs 370Z vs Cayman

Back to basics GT86 meets brawny 370Z and the inevitable used Porsche alternative

The debate as to whether the GT86 is fast enough rolls on. I think it's indicative of how we have recently become addicted to unnecessary levels of straight-line performance that we think a car which does 0-60mph in 7.4sec (Autocar figures) is plain slow.

Enough power? To enjoy yourself, yes
Enough power? To enjoy yourself, yes
I spent a day driving it around the UK and not once did I think it needed more power. Not given the balance of poke and chassis balance. Right now, it's so sweet it seems a shame to spoil it. I'm sure a turbo will make it mentally sideways and dip into the fives to 60, but that would be a different type of car.

The rivals? The recently overlooked Nissan 370Z and the German curve-ball, otherwise known as a used Porsche Cayman S. The idea being quite obvious: see just how much the GT loses against the Nissan by being over 100hp down, and answering those echoing forum voices who look at the cost of these new toys and yell, incessantly, "You can get a used Porsche for that kind of money!"

Where's your money going?
Where's your money going?
Indeed you can. But it doesn't have a five-year warranty.

We drove motorways, dual-carriageways, a well-known three-sided configuration of Welsh roads - pretty much every road type an owner could hope for - and reached a conclusion that included observations, among others, concerning the '86's freakishly impressive fuel-consumption.

You'll have to watch the vid to find out more.

Great video as usual Chris. Infact, damn brilliant video. Seeing the cars mid air & sideways, proper hoonage.
The GT86 just looks great on the road.

I like the GT86 and test drove one recently but found it just too slow.

If you are going to include used cars - how about the E92 M3? I bought one recently with only 15k miles for £28.5k from a BMW dealer!

"Used Cayman S"..so typical of Harris even when a Porsche is not relevant he tries to make it so...so transparent. It's such a shame he has an agenda he is a quality video journalist.

err i think you find he avoided the obvious magazine group test (ie GT86 v renault cup whatever) and put 2 cars that we on the forum keep referring to

These videos are brilliant. Only way to make them better would be to make them longer.

That Cayman looks very bouncy on its Bilsteins. Shame he didn't compare it with a more standard car.

Really good comparison that, but I cannot believe the GT86 spec car you had was £28K, bloody hell, for me it would be the Cayman all day long, it has the History, It's a Porsche, and it sound bloody great, all that for under £20K, where to I sign, and as you said Chris, it is going to still be worth a good lump sum at the end of play day, not to sure I can say the same thing for the GT86.
