Yum. Something else I always wanted as a kid - I recall the Testarossa vs. Countach arguments (me on the Countach side).

I'm sure there was a test that got it up to 195mph - cover headline on Performance Car I think.

31 years old and still no bugger knows how to pronounce it ! (Me included..)

Saw one the other day on the motorway.. a rare and timely reminder of how gawp-worthy this car really is..

Eyes weren't off the road for long, guv.. 'onest

Looking back at it now, it highlights to me how radical the design was in the early 70's. No wonder I wanted one then, even the E-types looked pre war against it.
I dare say someone will pipe up "it drove like a truck though", I say to you, but it looks a million dollars and you'd feel like a million dollars driving it, road presence is king for exotica.
Surely, as our country cousins across the pond would say "it should be in the hall of fame"

Well I gotta say I think it is STILL the ultimate in car lookers ! Yes in its day it was the king of Supercars, but now has been overshadowed by technology advances. Ive always wanted one, and always will. The best ones I think are the first LP400 and the later 400S. Forget the anniversary with that stoopid body kit on it - and with all the extra weight from 'electric seats', just makes it an 'also-ran'.
I also think it looks better than any Diablo or Mercilargo. Have you ever tried to work on the engine in any of these cars ?? Forget it unless you want to lie on a trestle across the engine LOL.

But in saying that, I dont know of any other car which can draw a crowd or make school girls scream, like the Countach can.

I remember (back in 1978) the Ferrari garage I worked at had a '77 red Countach for sale. The salesman took it to Scotland for a punter to try, he left Surrey at 08.30 and was back at just after 15.00. . No tax cameras in those days!

Slightly off topic:

I remember a friend of my old man who used to be a mechanic on Lamborghini in the 70s.
When a spark plug needed changing, they used to replace all of them, and kept the remaining good ones for their private use
I hope servicing has improved since then...

One of the main reasons I begain to become interested in cars as a kid was watching the start of "The Cannonball Run" and seeing the black Countach flying along.

I have to admit to having a copy of the beginning of the film on tape in my car so I can listen to the Countach howling away and imagine what it would be like to drive one (a bit sad I know ).

Yes very sad!
But saying that I like the cut of your jib young man, ahh the innocence of youth I remember it fondly.

The Cannonball Run has got to be one of the best Pistonhead related films of all time.

Oh and Catherine Bach and Farah Fawcett

The out-takes really are the best though.

I have an mp3 copy of the theme tune to the Cannonball Run. The lyrics aren't aren't much good, but it's well worth having just for the sound of the Countach at the beginning which then reappears again later in the track.

Downloadable with software from www.kazaa.com , install kazaa and the do a search for cannonball run

DON'T install Kazaa - it installs a shedload of spyware - goto www.kazaalite.nl - this is a frigged version which does away with all that shit but still allows you to download all the same stuff..

The version I have is copied straight from the DVD onto a cassette and not from the official soundtrack. I think the one from the official soundtrack does not have all the engine sounds as in the film.

Sound quality may be slightly lower but you get the whole 3 mins etc of Countach sound and not just at the start and end of the song.

Again my sadness has been reinforced - the shame, the shame!!!

The Countach is the ugliest and most tacky car ever created. It looks like it was knocked up from plywood sheets, by a blind man. Amazingly Lambo previously created the beautiful Miura. What happened?

I disagree, the Countach used to be my favourite looking car when i was a nipper. I think it looks real aggressive, especially when you see them in the skin, and its performance for the time was supposed to be up there with the best of them. All IMO of course

I have a book which says that the name, pronounced coon-tash, is an exclamation which was uttered by one of the lambo guys when he saw the car in the flesh for the first time, and means something roughly like f**k me. Probably not true at all but a good story.

I can confirm both Basil's pronunciation and translation.

On a similar note I understand that the Pajero is called Shogun over here as Pajero is Spanish for W~#ker.

I've never thought of the Countach as being anything other than an ugly pig of a car, prefer an E Type or a Muira anyday.

Sure the Miura is one of the most beautiful cars ever built...Could be a good idea to rebuild a modern version, which would be as good to drive as it is good-looking.
Anyone fancies doing this?
