PH2: Honda to build roadgoing MotoGP rep

25 years after the RC30, Honda is making another street-legal racer

A quarter of a century after the benchmark RC30, Honda has announced that it will be launching a road-legal MotoGP replica.

The Daddy: RC30
The Daddy: RC30
Honda’s boss Takanobu Ito confirmed that the new supersports motorcycle will feature technologies derived from the firm’s MotoGP bikes. He described the bike as “delivering the same passion and excitement that the RC30 supersports bike created when launched in 1987.”

So, what will this new bike be? Honda announced this year that it will be making a ‘production racer’ version of its RC213V to run in MotoGP, and there's a fair chance that the new rep will be based around this bike. That fits in with Honda’s current pushing of the V4 concept, as the RC213V features a ‘production’ version of the GP engine.

Honda has a fine tradition of V4s in its range, with homologation specials such as the RC30 and RC45 as well as the mini-V4 NC30 and NC35 and the iconic NR750, not to mention of course the enduring VFR. PH2 will bring you more info when we can dig it out.

One thing however is certain: any ‘MotoGP rep’ is unlikely to come cheap, as the £40k Ducati Desmo proved. Start saving now - Honda's GP bike for the road is expected in 2014.

The RC30 was utterly mould-breaking, mainly because of the chassis - it was the first bike I rode that kept its tyres on the road, and that made me understand how the TT boys were able to do what they did. Great engine too, really high gearing, as I recall it did over 80 in first.

I will believe it when I see it, there have been rumours about Hondas latest V4 superbike for the last few years and it hasn't materialised.
Then there was talk of a V4 monster Fireblade which never happened either and when the competition in the form of the S1000RR, RSV4,ZX10R and 1199 moved things on again with power hikes and very useful and accident preventing electronic aids what did Honda do with the Fireblade?, minimal faring reshaping and 'an exciting range of new paint schemes'.

John Urry must have the easiest job on PH.

Quite a few of his articles appear after that topic has been discussed to death in Biker Banter, this one being a case in point but also quite common with MotoGP topics I've noticed.

If I were in the slightest bit cynical I'd be imagining that he spends his time reading BB and uses theads in that forum as a basis for his articles...

I think this is the most exciting motorcycle news this year. Honda's going to pull out all the stops to try and put BMW and Ducati in their place, the current GP bike is a beast. If Honda deliver the goods I'll be getting one !

In defence of the PH journos, which isn't generally my style...

We don't have to worry about embargos or libel or anything like that in the forums. These guys do. We can talk about things long before official announcements because if they don't come off the only person that looks silly is the poster not, ya know, Haymarket.

Even MCN pulled this article soon after the initial publication, demonstating that PH was right to wait on this one.

I have no idea what MotoGP articles you're refering to, but 'lateness' could be explained by the fact that as far as I know, the PH writing staff is skeletal (so much so that a work experience boy seems to be writing all their news stories at the moment) and they're unlikely to have a full time biking writer since that's not really PH's remit.

If you want bang up to date biking news, PH isn't really the place for it. BB might be, but not the news homepage.

In the past it has always been journalists speculating and "an un named source at Honda". This time is different as Honda have formally announced it is happening.

Personally, I doubt it will be a blade as the blade is a CBR and they have inline engines. It will be either an RVF or a VFR.

Ah, things like this make me want to finally take my test and get on a bike.

I only wish I could convince myself i'd get more than half a mile before needing to scrape my face off the tarmac!

Just wear a full face lid.

Oh and the first person to have both this thing and a Desmo in their garage wins at toys.

It would be a Motogp rep if it was a V5.
If it is like the VFR1200, the RC45 or the NR 750 then forget it.

If it is like the RC30 or the SP2, it might just be good. however isn't this all a bit late.
Ducati did it in 2003. Now they look like they are just trying to piss them off.
And what about a new Fireblade or will that fizzle up again?
