Time For Tea? Hot Swedish action

Behave, not that kind of hot Swedish action - this is definitely work safe!

So, browsing through the back pages of the new issue of Classic & Sports Car (from whom we 'borrowed' some rather nice pics to illustrate our 550 Maranello buying guide - thanks chaps!) we chanced upon this rather magnificent looking car.

OK, actually not magnificent looking. A bit dumpy really. But undeniably cool. And quick enough to apparently beat Schnitzer 635CSIs and the Walkinshaw XJSes. So this car is for sale, even if the advert doesn't have a whole lot of information with it. If you're interested you can drop them a line.

And in the meantime check out the video we found off the back of looking at the ad and wondering if there was any footage of it in action. There is, these things racing - in all things - at Bathurst in their day. But this one is, appropriately enough, from Sweden and features the Volvo getting stuck in with the classic SD1 touring cars. Big, bruising touring cars the lot of them.

Enjoy!

is it just me or is anyone else finding that volvo 240s turn their heads these days? I think as they have become rare they are just so startlingly different that they definitely look cool now. I'm sure the driving experience would leave much to be desired, although I used to hussle my dad's Black Thor limited edition one when I didn't know any better and it made the most excellent American cop car tyre squeals when you pushed on round corners!

I've wanted one for quite some time now. Kind of cool in the same way that a tank top is cool. Not everyone will get it, but you don't care anyway.

The estate is the one for me. A 240 like the one my dad had years ago, but maybe not beige with the brown vinyl roof rolleyes

Funny you should say that - I was making pretty much exactly the same comment to Mr Garlick as I was preparing this story. He didn't seem to be feeling the love but there's a silver estate on my road I walk past every day and it's growing on me in a way I never, ever thought they would back in the day.

Hm.

Me too. Much like Saabs of the era they're starting to look ever-cooler to me, while I have no love for the Ford/Vauxhall stuff of the same era.

I remember seeing a 240 of some description at the British Rallycross Grand Prix at Brands in the early nineties (poss late eighties). It was the most odd sight given the RS200's/ 6R4's etc that dominated.

Brings back memories of the successor to this - Rickard Rydell in an 850 T5 saloon or estate. Ultimate sleeper !

The 850 T5 was a cracker, this is a very cool bit of kit, love the RWD volvos, go to any drift event and you'll see the volvo revival in full force!

Wonder what the drag coefficient was for that great slab-sided Swede?
A bit of work smoothing out the shape with filler and I'm sure would have done a few more mph on the straight.

Just sold a lovely 740 estate a few months back. It was useless in the corners, terrible in a straight line. Good for hauling all the family around in though.

It went to a very stylish young mum.

The two door version is called a 242. Hens teeth in this country, inevitably much more common in Sweden. Hope the link works. Prices are in Swedish, roughly speaking 10000Swedish is 1000UK£.

Love the 240, very cool now but wouldn't have been seen dead in them as a youngster, this was touring cars best moment apart from the Sytner, Rouse etc era a few years later, will never forget those Sierras laying rubber most of the way up the straight.
