The wife's range rover failed to start and was relayed to the local main dealer (her idea, not mine) with a knackered alternator. Four year old V8 diesel vogue. Got the message today that the new alternator was £230 (at least reasonable) but required SIX HOURS' LABOUR AT NEARLY A HUNDRED AN HOUR!

For the love of the sweet baby Jesus, how on earth can it take the best part of a day to change an alternator? Or are they, as I suspect, putting their arm in?

Best way to access it is from underneath and you need to remove a load of the cooling system too...

Takes a few hours, not sure about 6hrs though.

hi Land Rovers repair time for a alternator replacement on a RHD TDV8 Range Rover is (dependent on VIN range) between 3.40 & 3.50 hrs.

Reason is the Alternator is water-cooled - try an independent - the parts costs will be a bit less but the labour will be a lot less.

Might I ask why you didn't take out the extended warranty?

I didn't think the V8 diesel alternator was water cooler, just a pig to get to?

The TDV8 alternator is not water cooled.
