Goodwood celebrates 911's 50th

Porsche 911's 50th birthday will be at the heart of the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed

The centrepiece sculpture on the lawn outside Lord March's house at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is always a talking point and it's been confirmed 2013 is Porsche's year.

As both the 20th anniversary year for the FoS and the 50th birthday for the 911 expect something suitably spectacular with a special sculpture taking centre stage, 911s of all types and ages to be found throughout the event. Expect cars representing all seven generations of 911 from both road and track everywhere from the concours display at the bottom of the hill to the rally stage at the top. And it won't just be 911s of course - 356s, 908s, 917s and 962s will be among the competition cars taking part in the various runs up the hill.

The 1967 911 Porsche is sending on a world tour to help inspire 50th birthday celebrations around the globe will be on show too, Goodwood part of the UK leg of its journey. You can keep tabs on it here.

I'll be giving Goodwood a miss this year then!

No interest in fast beetles, they're bad enough to drive when they're slow!

Most over-rated car of all time.

Air-cooled until 1998, STILL rear-engined in 2013 FFS. Come on porsche, the joke's over.

If Ferrari, or anyone else, came out with a rear-engined car now they would be the laughing stock of the industry. Quite rightly.

Ahh but it's a huge success so it must be good right? So is Justin Beiber, does that mean his music must be good?

Somebody get this man some track time in a GT3 RS and a ride in a 997 Turbo on a typical british damp b-road.

The Thursday is the Moving Motor Show, so is more geared around new cars, with prospective customer test drives up the hill (if you've got your cheque book with you). AFAIK, the 'classic' stuff doesn't start running up the hill until the Friday.

I am with this man i am afraid smile

Not because i subscribe to why he dislikes the cars, i dont think there is any doubt they are good. But i just dont think i can cope with with all the Porsche branded clothing and accessories that will be proudly displayed in the vain hope people will be impressed that you own a Porsche or support the brand.

I also cant imagine getting into that line at a food stall or by a display listening to those adenoidal voices discussing trick differentials or the ceramic brake option, in fact any of the "what spec did you go for conversations" etc

Fills me with dread frown

I got free tickets through Facebook last year for the Thursday, as someone else said, the classics don't run up the hill on Thursday but the paddocks are still open and there's plenty to look at including all the stalls and displays.
