Pic Of The Week: Alfa GTA 1300 Junior

A stunning classic from the days when even little Alfas were effortlessly stylish

Yesterday’s piece about Alfa’s celebration of 50 years of Autodelta got us all nostalgic about old Alfas, and after getting it written and live, we spent a small chunk of our day salivating over pictures of some classic examples.

Junior looks just as good in the wild
Junior looks just as good in the wild
Like this shot of the GTA 1300 Junior. Although it featured in our piece, we didn’t really get a chance to talk about what an utterly glorious little car this is. In an era when small family car design had obviously hit a sweet spot – it was similar in size and market to the almost-as-pretty Mk1 Escort and BMW ’02 models – the 105-Series coupe, on which the GTA was based, stood out as the most perfectly-proportioned of the lot. Tasked with building a touring car from the 105-Series, Autodelta embarked on a serious programme of lightening, adding aluminium panels, plastic windows, magnesium alloys and lightweight interior trim, among other things. The result was the GTA, the ‘A’ standing for ‘allegerita’ – or ‘lightened’, and Autodelta’s modifications had the pleasing side-effect of turning an already-pretty car into one that was drop-dead gorgeous.

It was on the GTA that the 1300 Junior was based, and although it lost some of the GTA’s weight-saving features, the Junior made up for it with a tiny engine of just 1,290cc. From this, in race ‘Corsa’ form, was squeezed a staggering 170hp, although the ‘Stradale’ version sold to the general public featured a less highly-strung 96hp, later raised to 110hp.

Such stats are impressive, but pale in significance next to the GTA’s stunning looks. There are many touring cars that make grown men weak at the knees, but few can boast such finesse and such perfectly-judged lines. The GTA is easily one of the finest-looking cars Alfa has ever made. Let’s hope they can find that return to form we’ve all been lusting after soon, eh?

Always loved the GTA and the road going GTVs were pretty cool too but just missed that purposeful stance. Not as good to drive however as I expected with that live axle making itself felt...

My Dad had a dark blue one of these in 1976 and shortly after passing my test he let me take it out - several times as I learnt what driving a sports car was all about, as opposed to driving my Mums Beatle! Fabulous little raspy exhaust note and a proper interior - spoilt though by the rust showing everywhere though all panels! Lovely pretty little cars that they just dont seem to be able to do anymore.

That is a loverly car, I watched a Alfa GTA 1300 Junior on youtube last night doing a hill clime and getting it all wrong, the poor little Alfa got completely trashed in the process, did not make for good viewing. Looked just like the one in the Pic Of The Week.

@Kermit79 Lovely looking GTV! Perfect stance.

I have a 2000GTV (had it in Carpool sometime back).

I am looking to replace the tyres on mine. I like the look of the tyres on yours. What make are they, and are they road legal? If road legal, I'd be grateful if you could give me some info on the tyre size (i.e. are they 185 14s?) and where you got them from. I've been on Longstone Tyres and have seen the Avon CRZ's which look very similar...

European Junk, Still the colours right to hide the rust

And why do they have a 4 leaf clover on the side? Good luck in case it falls apart or catches fire due to dodgy electrics?

WOWZA that is gorg, I bet that side exit exhaust sounds awsome. I saw one at AutoItalia spring show a few years back and the smell and noise as it run up the hill was awsome

Very nice. Fancied an old 1600 GTA last year until I released they'd long since gone north of my budget.

The 2000 GTVs still seem reasonably priced though and to my uneducated eyes look every bit as good as the GTA.

Estimate £18,000 - £22,000

No contest? I bet you haven't even considered the quality of the interior plastics?

I am biased but you could buy a beautiful Fulvia Fanalone for less than half the price of one of these...in case you were desparate for a lightweight coupe with lots of charisma and competition pedigree....

Wonderful in every way. I'd love a 2000 GTV, finding a good/restored one isn't the work of a moment though.
I have one in very good condition (with 46k original miles on the clock), but 2 years of ownership and I can't imagine selling it.

If you are serious about buying one, check out:

http://www.amazon.com/Alfa-Romeo-Giulia-Coupe-Esse...

(As an aside point the one on the front cover and further featured inside the book is the car I now own)

This book is very helpful in finding a good one. The ones with the 1750 engines are more desirable because the details inside and out are actually prettier, but they can command £25k +.

Once it gets under your skin though, you won't want to let it go, trust me.
