McLaren P1 pricing and performance

Final pieces of P1 jigsaw revealed by McLaren along with new images of finished car

McLaren has issued yet another press release on the P1 – but this time, it promises, it’s the last. Well, until the Geneva Motor Show comes along, that is. The company says that the latest release gives us the “final numbers, images and information” relating to the P1 – in other words, this is all we’ll get until the car makes its debut in production form.

New vents are only obvious change
New vents are only obvious change
Accompanying the new info, we’ve been given a smattering of new shots of the P1 in its finished, production form. There are a couple of very subtle changes over the concept – for example, the new vents which sit just forward of the front wheels – but on the whole, the production car stays creditably true to the original.

More importantly, we’ve finally been a better idea of the new car’s performance figures, though McLaren is still staying tight-lipped on exact figures. 0-62mph will take “less than three seconds”, 0-125mph “under seven seconds”, and 0-186mph (300km/h, in case you were wondering) will come up in “less than 17 seconds” – 23 per cent faster than the McLaren F1. Top speed, meanwhile, will be electronically limited to 217mph.

P1 will cost £866,000; 375 will be made

Those figures looks set make it faster in acceleration terms – albeit only fractionally – than Ferrari’s F150 – although it has to be noted that that’s a car about which Ferrari has officially revealed very little thus far, in stark contrast to McLaren’s drip-feed approach.

We’ve also been told how much the P1 will cost when it arrives: £866,000, to be precise. As expected, it’ll be exclusive, too; just 375 examples will be produced. The official reveal – at which point, we hope, we’ll be given the full spec on the new car, as well as an idea of its on-sale date – will take place at next week’s Geneva Motor Show. Naturally, we’ll bring you all the details as we get them.

Need to see one in the flesh as still not convinced by the styling personally.

All subjective of course but it just looks far too busy to my eyes.

yes Same here. Not keen on the styling at all in the pictures.

Impressive numbers, though.

Fantastic figures but I am still undecided on the looks

OT how long before cars are so fast they are almost impossible to drive?!

Seems strange electronically limiting the top speed - presumably they wanted to make a "point" that they're about acceleration and handling rather than top speed, which is what the Veyron was all about.

I've had a couple of opportunities to see it in real life - you will struggle to not like it. The shape is pretty complex and rather captivating - not something that you can fully appreciate in photos.

Hopefully after Geneva they will start showing the car around in the UK more often.

It's going to be an epic motor, there's no doubts about that now. Well done to the entire team!

Looks MUCH better in yellow than Volcano Orange, IMO. The top speed being limited to 217 mph? fk that! £866,000 hypercar, I'd want everything.

Soooo, boring. Yep it's super fast, but so what. Way quicker than anyone could possibly exploit on the road and there's loads better track kit for a tenth of the price.

It's no better looking that a host of other "Super Cars" that are a 3rd of the price as well.

Absolutely pointless. If I had the dosh, which I don't and desperately wanted a McLaren I'd buy it's much cheaper brother. More than enough car for 99.99999% of even the super talented drivers found on here and give the rest to charity.

375?

I thought they were making 500. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of buyers are holding off committing until they've seen Ferrari's hand.

I'm not sure what to make of Mclaren blinking first in terms of full revealing of specs. Do they know something about the Ferrari which means they need to try and get P1 buyers before the F150 is announced?

This way all the buzz at Geneva is going to be about the Ferrari.

I think you're right. That way, they're not even entering that particularly absurd contest. Besides, 350 km/h is quite enough I guess !
I am surprised they're even bothering with the equally irrelevant 0-60.

What a brilliant event this car is. What's not to like ? You'll have to be quite fussy to start criticising it...

There'll be a technical reason behind 217mph. Could be transmission cooling, battery pack loading/cooling or even engine cooling (however unlikely at a Vmax).

217Mph top speed limit. that's circa 350km/h. Tyre ratings/limits?

It's 350 km/h. I reckon they just chose a round(ish) figure.

I too was suprised to see the top speed this side of 220mph (it's the same top speed as the Enzo)...but McLaren are not about top speed, they're about delivering a performance package as a whole and top speed is just one element of that.
I can't wait for the first time journalists get the Ferrari the 918 and the P1 together!!!

I wonder if they'll take a finished XP P1 somewhere for an actual vmax run minus the limiter as they did with the F1.

I'm guessing it won't be Ehra-Lessien again if they do, since that's Bugatti/Lambo territory this time (and Nardo is Porsche, and not really big enough anyway).

I'd be interested to know what the frontal area and Cd factor of the P1 are in both "downforce" and "clean" modes. I'm probably in the minority there, though smile
