Time For Tea? Maserati History 'Gran Tour'

OK, so it isn't a video, but this clever history lesson will take up most of your afternoon...

While indulging in our usual lunchtime skulk around the internet at large, we found ourselves on Maserati’s site, whereupon we discovered this. And promptly lost a vast proportion of the rest of our afternoon.

Warning: this'll take up vast chunks of your day
Warning: this'll take up vast chunks of your day
So that we’re not the only ones fending off cries of ‘Get back to work!’ from our bosses, we thought the only natural way forward was to share it with you. It’s a really rather neatly-done trip through Maserati’s history, starting with the Maserati family in the 1900s, and running through the development of the early pre-war models, the era of Fangio, the supercars of the 60s and 70s, through to the Biturbo and then the modern day.

It isn’t just about the cars, though; along the way there are absorbing niblets about other aspects of the Maserati story – influential people, important milestones and key world events that have had an influence on the history of the company. For any Maseristi worth his or her salt, it’s a superb way to fill the gaps in the history of a much-loved company, and for the rest of us, it’s a fascinating (and very engaging) way not just to learn more about Maserati, but also to drool over some of its most iconic cars. Not to mention the childish glee involved in seeing how fast you can get the timeline to scroll along, of course. Not that we’ve tried that or anything. Ahem.

See here.

And the award for the ugliest car on the timeline goes to... the current Quattroporte. What an abomination. Even worse than the Biturbo.

Not checked it thoroughly, but there seems to be plenty of holes in the car history. Indy, Merak, Khamsin, Kyalami, MC12 etc.

Still at least the Biturbo Berlin gets bigged up! rolleyes

Pretty poor from the manufactuer - Why does the Bora detail page show a Merak?

That's ridiculous isn't it? What were the PH staff looking at all afternoon to not notice that?

I'm waiting with baited breath for the Mercedes Benz illuminating badge story (acts as interior light and exterior find-me lights, lights up when car is stationary, parked, locked etc). That should get everyone on here ranting, raving and generating a lot of web traffic!!

Got to love the Marketing Department doing history, the Italian railways were very advanced for 1900!

Inaccuracies aside, I LOVE Maserati's, alway have always will and I am so close to buying one. A GranSport or a GT will be what I go for after my kids grow up and I can ditch the estate car phase. For me the Masers are far more special than any Lambo or Fezza.

Poor work by the Maser historical staff, really, but did bring up some fun memories, including a lovely red 3500GT that sat on the curb near my childhood house for a couple of years. It would start up every once in a while, as I knew from the sound, and in retrospect it must have had a muffler problem because it was the very anvil of Satan when revved.

You cannot deny it is not a good looker compared with the previous model. Besides I see you own an S-line, so by PH rules, I win wink
