Five-door Fiesta ST

Ford courts purist fury by adding more doors and more choice to the hot Fiesta range

It was only the other week we were asking if the three-door hot hatch was effectively dead, picking out the Fiesta ST as one of the few die-hards in the market to stick with the traditional format. But guess what - Ford's just announced a new five-door version! Depending on your viewpoint this is either a dilution of the Fiesta's hardcore appeal or a sensible expansion of a successful product that's already found 38,000 customers in Europe alone. And could well find a good few more previously put off by the three-door only format.

Now the children can love it too!
Now the children can love it too!
We're pretty familiar with the ST of course, the five-door version carrying over the official 182hp and 177lb ft output of the 1.6-litre turbocharged Ecoboost engine. Out of the box that's good for 0-62 in 6.9 seconds and official figures of 46.3mpg and 141g/km - all convincing on-paper arguments given further credibility by the ST's engagingly feisty character at the wheel. To that there is, of course, the added appeal (some might say no-brainer option) of 'going Mountune' and getting a base 200hp as stock with 215hp on overboost - a bargain at just £799 and fully warranty compatible.

Out-driving the competition on the road while undercutting them on price has, no doubt, helped the Fiesta's case since it went on sale in 2013, the five-door kicking off at £19,495 for the ST-2. That £600 premium - pretty much a Mountune kit as it goes - will no doubt calm the hardcore fans who believe a hot hatch with more than three doors isn't worthy of the description. And if you're really dedicated and want to prove it the limited run ST200 remains three-door only.

I really don't see what the issue is.

Ford wants more sales so offers more flexibility.

Moaning purist still has the choice of 3dr if they want it.

Everyones happy.

I was wondering if and when they would produce this.
Makes sense in my mind.
The focus come in ST format also a diesel. So why not the fiesta.
I for one would be very happy to have a 5dr 1.6 TDCI Fiesta ST.

Isn't the US model 5 door only anyway?

Good move, I know lots of people who wanted a 5 door ST.

There has been a 5 door ST since the ST was launched, it's just not been on sale in the UK.

It is 5 door only.

Personally, I would only buy a 3 door hot hatch but I can understand that Ford want to sell as many as possible so the 5 door will appeal to more people.

FFS I wanted one of these and they told me they were never doing them here. Oh well good news anyway.

Seems an odd time to do this - surely this generation of Fiesta is not long for this world? I wonder if they're now being offered in 3-door guise in the US too?

Far more desirable than the three-door, IMO.

It does seem rather late in the model cycle but then I guess this is mostly just a question of bolting together bits they already have so I doubt the R&D costs were very significant.

what was 3dr vs 5door sales like of the reguar fiesta and all its trim levels? I'm just speculating that not many people buy 3drs, maybe they wanted to sell off those first? merely speculating.

nowadays it seems more popular for people to be buying 5door versions of superminis, hell thats why they're doing that 5door Ka+ right?

I wish this had been on sale from the start of this model ST as I could do with one however the budget doesn't stretch to a new one. It's only relatively recently the 5 door hot hatch has become the norm.

Quite a clever move from Ford as a 5-door option on the Fiesta ST was never going to dilute the brand. Potentially selling more to other target markets while also maintaining it's current customer base will mean they will sell even more than they already are doing.

They're getting everyone ready for the five door only model due to be released next year. I foresee toys shall be thrown from prams!

Pictures of the three door 2017 Fiesta were published last week.

PSST: Dealers don't get future product information. They aren't part of the parent company.

Good news, more practical and to my eyes better looking than the 3-door. Will consider one when the crazy cheap finance deals appear.

I thought it would look rubbish. To my surprise I prefer it over the 3 door which to my eyes has always looked like a toddlers version of a Nike air max trainer on wheels.

If you're desperate for a 3-door, just have two doors welded shut. Preferably the rear ones.
Then you'll have the added flexibility of rear windows that lower.
Even if no-one can get in to operate them.

A much more complete looking car, that. And as ridiculous as it is to say, it now looks like a proper baby Focus.

3 doors don't always work on principle alone. A 5dr RS Clio 200 (2.0 N/A) would have looked daft.
