Afternoon all,

I am currently changing cars and to stick with my current insurance company - it is going to cost me an extra £800 for the year ahead, which I would rather cut down.

However, they do let me use my 10 year NCD on both of my cars - I am looking to get some other quotes, but does anyone know or use another insurance company that allows this?

Many thanks!

Some may do a multi car policy, which is similar.

You would need to phone a broker and ask if they will mirror your NCD for you to a second policy.

Not uncommon, but i dont think you'll be able to use the online sites to do it.

Surely a multi car policy requires you to have bonus on each of the cars that you have? You cant, by default have bonus on one and then get that bonus applied to say a second and third car?

I'm not sure you can actually use it on two - Maybe if they're insured with the same underwriter.
Many companies offer a "mirrored" policy which acknowledges the fact you have XX years of no claims on another vehicle.

I think it's a load of bks personally.

You can't use no claims earned on other policies to save you money but if you have an accident on the other policy then you have to declare that!

It won't ever happen but if should be YOUR no claims as it doesn't matter how many cars you drive, it's not like you're going to be driving all of them at once, although it would be quite the feat.

Thank you for the comments -

Daemon - I think you are right, I will just bite the bullet for now and when the policies are up for renewal I will get a broker to sort it (I have one in mind down in Bristol who should be able to help).

All bonkers really - and they pick and choose the rules to suit them, I can't drive both cars at once, and if I crash either of them it affects my NCD.

This ^^^

I use my NCD on my "main" car, and then my 2nd car is with a different insurer/broker who mirrors my NCD (ie. effectively gives me the discount i would have got with my 16yrs NCD).

Whole thing is a farce/con really. The 16yrs I have is MY discount, and if I choose to have 2 / 10 / 50 cars why can't I get a discount on them all (I know, they have mirrored it, but that was hard work, and not easily or quickly available). If I crash one of them, you can bet your bottom dollar that the insurance on ALL of them will go up (including my wife's car, which I am insured on).

NCDs are owned by the owner but commonly accrue on seperate cars as two different records. What may have happened to you is that when you bought a second car they allowed you to have a full NCD on the second car because you had a good claims record with the first car. But from there the two cars effectively now have 2x NCD records for insurance purposes.

Check this with your insurer. It might be cheaper to insure the cars seperately, or move both together. Many years ago I worked for LV= and they were very good with multi car policies, with discounts depending on whether it was one or two drivers only. Might be worth seeking them out?

Don't get me started!

Its a farce, you earned the NCB so it should apply to all cars... after all you can only drive one at a time. Seems that's not how it works though. Ironically my points apply to all my policies though....

Flux are ok, they 'mirror' you maximum NCB over several policies.

I use Sky Insurance and they mirror my no claims on both cars. They're technically a broker, but they've always got me the cheapest quotes.

You're insuring against more than being behind the wheel. Both can be nicked, written off by a lorry while parked and so on.

Esure mirror NCD. They also give and extra 10% discount for every additional car. I insure 3 performance cars with them for around £450 each.

Elephant mirrored my ncb on a third car and admiral followed it with a multicar.
P38 RR, Audi A4 and E65 750 fully comp me and the wife - around £600

You gotta surf and ring all the multicar insurers for several hours until you get the price down. Admiral, Elephant, Esure, etc. etc.

Follow this process and you're sure to save cash:

Call Greenlight.

They are the first broker I've found who:

- understand stuff like this
- don't try the "your insurance is now eleventy billion pounds at renewal" game

Not associated with them in any way, but do have 5 cars insured through them.

Providing both policies are with them, despite being 2 individual policies, Aviva and Adrian Flux have allowed me to mirror my NCB on a second car. Saved an absolute packet, every multi car policy I've been quoted for is extortionate in comparison to 2 individual policies too.

I managed to get privilege to mirror mine a few years ago on a multi car policy but its got to the point where it will be cheaper to insure with two different providers as I now have 3 years ncb on the mx5 mk3. On the other hand, I also have two mx5 mk1s insured under the same classic policy so earn ncb regardless of which one I drive

I too have been using Greenlight for the past 10 years for 5 cars, and also find them a pleasure to deal with.

This years renewal via Greenlight using 5 separate policies is coming out to just under £1500, limited mileage and market value.

Footman James can cover 4 of my vehicles for agreed value and unlimited mileage for £900.

Just waiting for PaceWard and Peter James to return with a quote to see which option is best.

One of the comparison sites I was on the other day (can't remember if it was the meerkat one or the discombobulated one), I was getting quotes on a second vehicle, and entered zero NCB as my 16 years is in use on the main policy. I was then asked whether I could prove claim free driving on any other policy, and how many years? I entered yes, and 16 respectively, and the prices I got back suggested a number of companies were prepared to mirror this discount. For the record it was a Volvo V70 D5 parked on the street, doing 12k a year with 6k business, and I was getting quotes from the high 300s upwards.
