£100K Garage: Gareth Lowe

A cosy DS, a G for mucky winter weekends, a Corrado and an Elise 111S fills Gareth's garage!

Name: Gareth Lowe
Previously owned: 1992 Vauxhall Nova 1.2, 1997 Rover 414, 1983 VW Golf 1.3 Driver, 1992 VW Golf 1.6 Driver, 1990 VW Golf GTI 8v, 1981 VW Golf (16v conversion), 1995 VW Passat GL 16v, 1991 VW Golf
GTI 8v.
Currently owned: Skoda Octavia 4x4 turbo
On the shortlist: Ferrari 355, Mk1 Range Rover, BMW 2002, BMW M3, Mk1 VW Golf GTI, Mk2 VW Golf G60, Porsche 911, Alfa Giulia Sprint, Alfa GTV (70s), Alfa Brera, Jag XKR - too many to list!

70s: Citroen DS D super one
Cost
: £24,950
Balance: £75,050
Why I chose it: "Such a great car, ahead of its time and probably one of the most impressive pieces of futuristic design in its day - a big, comfy and slightly ridiculous car, what's not to love? Perfect for summer hols with the family, camping in France."

80s: Mercedes G-Wagen
Cost
: £12,995
Balance: £62,055
Why I chose it: "My grandad had a G-Wagen in the 80s; for me they're so much better than a Landie and, if you can look past the last 10 years of rappers putting railway wheels on them, they are still incredible cars.

"I wanted an off-roader in the garage, something for mucky winter weekends - this is the only winner for me in that sense. However I love 80s cars so it was a hard choice for this section over a Golf GTI, 911 or Integrale, but the £100K garage has seen plenty of them."

90s: VW Corrado VR6
Cost
: £7,995
Balance: £54,060
Why I chose it: "I've always fancied a Corrado following the Golfs I've had and the VR6 is considered the best. Not many good ones left but this one seems decent, in a nice colour with good history. It should run and run. Again the 90s car was a tough choice as I have always wanted a Ferrari 355 but, again, it's somewhat predictable. And expensive!"

2000s: Lotus Elise S1 111S
Cost
: £21,999
Balance: £32,061
Why I chose it: "This leaves me with a lot of unspent budget but I don't care! An S1 Elise was always on my list somehow from when I first drove one and started playing the £100K Garage game. Lots of faster, plusher, more expensive cars exist but not many would make you smile as much within the legal limits of the road."

"I'd be happy with my lot if I could have those four, the remaining money will ensure good mechanics and a trailer!"

Interesting choices, love the DS. I saw a black one the other day it it looked utterly amazing.

I also realy like Elise's but that S1 is unbelievably expensive - I looked up that add for the can't work out why it’s 22k - massively overpriced and its looks cheap with its silly sticker on window.

I'd much prefer a S2 - for 15k you get a good S2 never mind 22k

Other than that specific Elise, great choice smile

Brilliant choices, I'd maybe swap the Corrado for a late MK2 Golf 16v biggrin

Well, not a fan of the French thing. For the Elise, yes, seems prices are on the rise which, is no surprise to me. Since, I have sold a couple for that and more in France.

Saw a couple in Germany for 30 000 euro.

DS and Elise are excellent choices, although I would agree about the Mk2 16v Golf as a possible replacement for the VR6.
Having said that, the VR6 is an excellent choice, with so much character.
The only thing I just couldn't live with is the Mercedes, that money would buy a nice 'Classic' Range Rover, which is better in so many ways....
