Shed Of The Week: Saab 900 V6

A Saab 900 for (just over) £900? In beige? Sounds like a great Shed

Beige. With beige cloth.

It doesn't sound like the most inspiring start to a Shed of the Week but, as with all those home-buying programmes on telly, it's all about seeing past the paisley carpet and flock wallpaper to discover what lies beneath. Which, in this case, is an extremely elegant and very usable classic from the glory days of Saab.

Before we go any further, let's crank up the shimmery flashback music and imagine ourselves back in Sweden in 1996, when this car was built. Seven years before that, in 1989, the car bit of Saab-Scania had been hived off. General Motors bought half of the resulting company. GM went on to influence Saab manufacture through the 1990s, and more so after 1993, but they waited until 2000 before turning Saab into a wholly-owned subsidiary. At this point they waded in with their biggest cost-cutting boots on and basically killed off Saab's key brand attribute of quality in the mainstream, leading to the disappointingly banal 9-3 of 2003 and the firm's bankruptcy in 2008.

But in 1996, while we Brits were reeling under mad cow disease and Charles and Di's divorce, your average Saab employee was still happy in his or her job, still taking a refreshingly old-fashioned view on things.

Admittedly, in the case of the '94-'98 'NG' 900, the Cavalier platform they were using wasn't exactly bespoke or traditional, but the 900i Coupe was certainly recognised as a strong and worthy machine back in the day, winning a British Steel Auto Design Award from the Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers. At a pinch, you could see it as a proper Saab.

It wasn't a quick one, even with this car's 24-valve V6 under the bonnet. Rated at 168hp and well known among Calibra owners, this Ellesmere Port-built engine featured a narrow 54 degree vee-angle (as opposed to the normal 60 degrees) to facilitate its planned big-picture fitment into a range of FWD or RWD cars.

Its biggest problem was timing belt issues. Not so much with the belts themselves, which should last for 100K miles, but with breaking tensioners. It's an interference design, so not keeping on top of the replacement schedule isn't something you'll get away with. Some reckon on changes every 50-60K miles, more cautious types say 30K.

The block is iron and the heads aluminium. Leaks between the two can and do occur, and also between the valve covers and heads. The good thing about the V6 engine is that it's easy to work on, relative to the turbo Saabs anyway, or indeed relative to any of the ones with timing chains. Plus the six doesn't have the oil sludging issues of the fours (which, incidentally, were related to Triumph's Dolomite unit).

Our Shed has the auto 'box, and it's important to keep the oil fresh in those. Loss of drive needn't be a fist-chewing worry, however: it can be down to something as simple as a dirty neutral safety switch.

Forget all that stuff though and look at the lines, the immaculate cloth seats (leather was a pretty rare option), those lovely turbine alloys, that boombastic boot and the cool Black Panel dash light-extinguishing feature that was interestingly renamed 'Night Panel' in 1999. This has been a loved car. The MoT was carried out in March. After a quick clearout to get the exhaust poisons down to the correct vole-stunning levels it passed with no advisories. Previous MoTs show a similar lack of incident, the only mention of corrosion being in regards to brake hose ferrules back in 2010. And that is a generic issue, not a Saab one.

If you fancy taking over the ownership of this fine beastie, of which probably less than 50 remain in the UK, you'll want to keep your eyes on the upper suspension mounts (front and rear), and on the handbrake which is a pain to keep properly adjusted. Clicking on full lock means worn driveshafts, while a wet patch in the passenger footwell means you've either got a blocked AC drain hose or your Gran's had another little accident. We won't bother mentioning the SID display unit as everyone knows about them. Oh. Too late.

Mrs Shed fondly remembers the mid-1990s. At this time she was going out with a sergeant in the local constabulary, a no-nonsense sort of a fellow and the owner of a 900 Coupe. Of course, Mrs Shed has had many interesting experiences with sleeping policemen, not to mention humps in quiet back streets, but she was particularly keen on 'her sarge' as she called him. Sadly the liaison came to an end when the copper traded his 900 in for a four-door that didn't have the Coupe's comfortably wide door apertures. Her next boyfriend was the driver of a delivery van with a hydraulic hoist attachment.

Here's the ad. For the Saab, not the van.

So is it a coupé or a cabriolet? A turbo or a V6?

Article says one thing, advert says the other, pics show something else!

Seems like a lot to me. I have bought them at £450 with fsh and 12 months MOT less than 100k miles. Great value though.

They couldn't make a decision. This is what is known in the trade as a hung SOTW.

What ?
Who has dropped a boo boo ?
If it's the saloon it's worth about £300.
If it's the cab it's worth about £450 .
So is it for both ?.
Good cars , had 2 900s 2 93s 1 9000 and a 95 never paid more than £400 .
Great bangernomic cars .
Handbrakes are easy once you know how .

The car in the pictures is a 139k mile car for sale by parkside motors in Uxbridge. Well at least according to their eBay ad it is. No reason to disbelieve them.

just bought a 2000 93 LPT convertible yesterday! These are definitely at the very start of being collectable (as the 900 has already become). It's lovely to drive and great condition, just need to figure out if I need a timing belt change now as it's unclear from the service history.

Another Saab as SOTW. No real complaints here, but it's probably the first Saab you've featured that isn't turbocharged, so no cheap remap. Auto box too, so this one is about wafting rather than performance. Nice velour, reminds me of my first 9-5 (heated velour, who knew?).
I love that 3 door body style. Pretty rare, but pretty. But the dealer has at least 100% profit in this one, it should be half that price.

I'm guessing Shed has been looking at this thread

What 20 year old car would you choose as your daily drive?

As for the people moaning about the price - It's from a garage by the look of things so with that extra bit of profit for the garage owner, you get cover from SOGA and if the wiper blades need changing in the first six months you can park it up, threaten to sue the garage for selling you an unroadworthy car and hire out a 3 series BMW or Audi A4 and they will have to pay for it all plus distress money under your rights as a consumer.

Nice comfy car to do some miles in.

There never was a "Coupe", just as there never was an E30 Coupe. It's a 3-door hatch, rather than a 5-door (the Saab, obviously, not the E30 - that was just a 2-door saloon). This was probably the biggest 3-door hatch available at the time, I would think.

Also, what's this talk of the "glory days of Saab"? Even non-Saab people know that those ended with the last of the 900s in 1993, when the engines were no longer north-south but transverse and the GM influence became stronger. Admittedly the 9000 was still going until 1997 but even that was a coalition (see what I did there?) of Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. The NG 900 promised much but delivered little. Rather like certain party election campaigns, in fact.

I'd rather have the proper 900 shape. This just looks like any other car of the era really and at £900 isn't cheap enough for me to overlook the mediocre styling and auto box. I'll pass thanks.

I like Saabs, but that:

1) Has a dodgy advert;
2) Is worth about £400; and
3) has the wrong engine and gearbox (2.0 turbo manual please).

This would be better methinks:

After having a 9000 and a 90 a few years beforehand, I bought a 5 yr old NG 900i.
Biggest POS I've ever owned, hateful thing and a money pit to boot.
A 900 Classsic T16 is still on the bucketlist though.

I had a Cosmic Blue 9-3 LPT of a 2001 vintage, not astounding at anything but a lovely package, the engine was the high spot for me, it suited the car very well and felt way more than 150 bhp, it kept up with a Civic Type R and a Mini Cooper S which suggested to me it had been remapped.

handling wasnt great but a good ride, mine was "club sport" spec, i.e.no aircon, I did have the chance to swap it for a non turbo 2 litre I was selling for my brother in law, similar age and mileage, the difference was allegedly 15 or so bhp but it was night and day, Saab nailed it with those LPT engines.

One of my favorites I have owned, replaced with a later 9-3 (SS) Aero which I never found quite as enjoyable, also, before I got the BSR map on that, it felt no quicker.

Good shed.

Sadly you'll need rather deep pockets for anything good these days, as values seem to have gone mental (comparatively) over the last few years.

Only for the 2-, 3-, 4- & 5-doors, mind: not so much the convertibles.

The convertible in your profile looks lovely, my favourite wheels too!
Ideally I'd like a 2/3 door in the (rare?) metallic blue that I've seen.
There's a non-turbo one around here that seems to get used as a daily driver and although not in any way mint, still exudes cool.
