Viper 'ring lap record attempt: Time For Coffee?

It didn't quite beat the 918, but by heck was it close...

Yes, another Nurburgring lap video, but there's a bit of additional context to this one. Earlier in 2017 PH reported on an attempt by Viper enthusiasts to take the production car lap record at the Nordschleife, convinced that a ACR Extreme could beat the Porsche 918 Spyder on the German circuit like it had on American circuits. This was before the Huracan Performante did its thing, of course, though it was a laudable aim. However without manufacturer support, the attempt had to be crowd funded.

The team got the money together, went to Germany and did the lap - this is the video. The lap time? It seems wrong to spoil the surprise here, so all we'll say is that it was faster than the old ACR. And it's now the fastest rear-wheel drive production car at the 'ring, as well as the fastest with the manual and the fastest American car. Take that, Camaro ZL1. That's enough clues...

Despite not achieving the ultimate goal, this video is absolutely incredible to watch. Every time you check the speed it seems to be at least 20kph up on what you might expect and that big V10 just keeps on hauling. Seeing a manual gearchange is a nice novelty in 2017, even if the one-handed approach is a little unnerving!

What happens now for the Viper we don't know; getting close to the 918 seems possible, though the Lamborghini may be a challenge too far. We'll keep you posted!

Watch the video here.

Are these road legal? Pretty bloody quick! Although I think with that livery it does look somewhat daft....

I moan at my girlfriend for driving one handed on the motorway, but this is something else yikes

An amazing video with a glorious sountrack though!

I'd love to see a comparison between a 918 and the Viper when driven by a mear mortal

I suspect that is what the extra cash gets you, ie, the average person could get a lot closer to the 918's ultimate time than they could to the Vipers Ultimate time. 1 handed, sideways, at 230kph, hoping you don't miss 5th is fun an all, but cripes, rather them than me ;-)

Awesome stuff, I bet they'd gain a chunk of time if they could trim some drag off the car though - it's absolutely nailed-on through the twisty bits, but it's haemorrhaging time on the faster bits. On the run down from foxhole the ACR is about 275kph, the 918 was over 300 at that point.

They were taken from the showroom floor of the dealer behind the attempt, not the the factory specials you see elsewhere.

Have you ever done a 7 minute ring lap?

Ballsy is a compliment... he's not saying it was a bad lap.

True, but there is a slight price difference (lambo is over twice the price), and there's always the question of tyres - the Lambo was on Trofeo Rs, what was the Viper running?

It has fully adjustable coilovers, you can set them how ever you want

"I drive my ACR to work and pick up groceries and I have no issues. People complain about the ride quality. I made mine so comfortable by adjusting the suspension by turning the two dials on each wheel. It tells you this in the owners manual. After this adjustment, it rides like a dream.? "

They certainly got their money's worth from the driver .... ballsy
Fastest manual car then I guess (and will probably have that one in perpetuity)

30kph faster than the GT3 through the kink before Aremburg, that's a lot!

Kumho tyres so they probably had a little less ultimate grip compared to the Pirelli/Michelins even so it's a good advert for Kumho.

Without a doubt but it's not just a bit of extra cash; the 918 is as good as ten times as much, give or take! The Viper is an absolute triumph for the old school; a manual, old, FR, 650bhp shouldn't be able to get within a country mile of a 4wd, 1000hp, hypercar... biggrin

The impressive bit is they're trying to go back to have another crack at that 918 time.

Here's the PH Link to the Ring attempt thread:

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=16...

I think that it's a great Swansong for the Viper, very impressive driving it's so strange to watch a manual change on these ring laps reminds me of (obviously not the same level but you get my drift) these:
