RE: Porsche 911 GT2 RS: 6:47.3
Wednesday 27th September 2017
Wow. If you can watch the video of a GT2 RS lapping the Nurburgring Nordschleife 12 seconds faster than a 918 Spyder and not be totally staggered, then you might want to check for a pulse. This is a crazy lap, the speeds recorded absolutely barmy and the composure shown by both car driver truly extraordinary.
Porsche 911 GT2 RS: 6:47.3
The latest mega 911 heads to the Nurburgring, returns with a Huracan-humbling lap
Six minutes and 47 seconds means the GT2 is not only brisker than the hybrid hypercar, but also five seconds ahead of the Huracan Performante - the goalposts move again! It's difficult to put such a time in context, but consider this for a start: the RS has lapped the Nurburgring a minute - a minute! - faster than the Golf GTI Clubsport S, the fastest front-wheel drive car there and a vehicle that's already lapped quicker than a 997-era 911 3.6 GT3. Madness.
Driving duties for this record attempt were taken on by Lars Kern, although Nick Tandy was involved too; indeed both clocked up more than one lap below 6:50, with the record lap requiring an average speed of 184.11km/h. That's 114mph...
Anyway, enough waffling, here's the video. Your move Lamborghini!

Spectacular, stunning, super-impressive.
But whilst I'm using words beginning with 'S' I can't help but bring up 'Stefan Roser' and the Yellowbird; as fast as the GT2 RS is it just doesn't store my custard like Herr Roser did.
Perhaps it's the nonchalant way he threw in arms full of oppo or his sartorial elegance, dancing on the pedals in jeans and loafers...?
Magnificent effort for the GT2 RS, and just when we thought that lap times couldn't get much quicker.

that is ludicrous! especially considering its only RWD! wow. balls of steel required
How on earth is any non pro driver going to do this? I bet most 911 owners can't even get a proper sub 9 lap at the 'Ring...I thought the Nurburgring had put a stop to manufacturers setting lap times. And they were going to run that, is this on of them?
Kind of amazing how tech moves on. The holy trinity is a now a footnote in history.
Great that Porsche still rise to the challenge when other manufactures poo poo the whole thing. Come one McLaren and Ferrari you make racing cars!!

So this is the second all time quickest production car? By my reckoning its just ahead of the long standing Radical SR8LM lap. I know a second here and there is easily lost/gained by a million factors at the ring but that's mightily impressive IMO.
Yes, I think the P1 LM is top of the list. That is only just about a production car too, with 5 units being built....Andy S15 said:
Still hoping that one day McLaren will drop the P1's secret laptime and it'll be some crazy quick number - a while back I read rumours of a 6:30 range time but for some reason they didn't want to publicise it. I can't imagine that reason to be because it was surprisingly slow...
Their reasoning at the time was out of safety concerns and the possibility that it was turning into a dangerous arms race. Several cars have now gone sub 7 minutes though, so I don't see that as much of an issue. Given that the time was set by Porsche who will be the one to question the validity of the time?
I'd fully expect questions about the use of 'racing' tyres or raised boost levels to be present after any claimed 'ring time. However, as Porsche are claiming the time where does that leave us?
Should Lamborghini/Audi register an 'official' complaint that there is no chance that this could be possible without some 'cheating'. Given that they are part of the same group I guess that rules them out.
Maybe Renault or Honda could provide some 'proof' by showing that an RS/Type-R driven backwards (which is basically a GT2) will get no-where near the time.

What a ballistic fabulous thing. Kind of makes a mockey of the holy trinity. 911 with 2WD and big turbos > a load of hybrid tech junk.
agreed, the hurracan made a mockery too!seems radical is being left behind with the ring times - they should send a new car out with a test driver and see what can be done
