PH Rumour Mill - Tokyo Edition
All the news (not) fit for print from the industry this week
Not wishing to endow the above with the pseudo-significance their very own stories would entail, we have instead fed it into the PH Rumour Mill, to be ground up and re-processed in a more easily digestible format. Bon apetit!
New Honda S2000
Autocar reports that Honda could be lining up a replacement for its iconic S2000. When pressed on the subject at the Tokyo Motor Show, Honda boss Takahiro Hachigo said, "As of today, I cannot say clearly that S2000 will be reinvented, as further studies are necessary... If the sales people investigate, look at it and they're really enthusiastic, maybe we look at it." Decisive stuff then.
New Mitsubishi Evo to be an electric SUV
There's nothing spurious about this story; it's more that we wish it wasn't true. Mitsubishi has shown off its e-Evolution SUV in Tokyo, replete with "an array of sensors" to assist with the business of driving. Evolution wasn't a moniker associated solely with the Lancer of course, it's been on an SUV before, but this latest development may well consign it once and for all to the drawer of marketing bumf.
Subaru Viziv Performance Concept
Subaru has also given us a peek at its upcoming plans with the Viziv Performance, a concept which previews its future design language with a WRX inspired front and a Proton-rammed-into-a-branch-of-Halfords everything else, supposedly representing a commitment to sporty models.
Mazda Vision Coupe Concept
Now this is more like it. A study of Mazda's forthcoming 'Kodo' design principles suggests modern yet elegant cars with just a hint of sophisticated aggression. Don't expect to see anything resembling this particular car enter production, but in much the same vein as the RX-Vision of two years ago, it's always nice to see what could be produced if those pesky profit margins didn't keep getting in the way.
Nice!
Nice!
Nice!

while on the subject of Evos, GTRs and the like, while the Evo is basically dead, it's a shame that the GTR looks and is just so... old nowadays! I'm a big fan and remember the big unveiling 10 years ago - with that initial 7.38 sec nurburgring lap - which just got bettered over time - under different conditions and throughout subsequent model years. I still love it but it's so dated compared to everything else out there... Why does Nissan think that such a long model lifespan is a good idea? In the time of the R35 there has been porsche 997, 991 and will be 992.
2007 was probably the last tokyo motorshow to get my pulse racing,
although props to subaru being a much smaller manufacturer still churning out the wrx sti!
Ditto the S2000, the rest? The Subaru looks likes a bad mash up of different cars, rear diffuser off a current gen Civic type R, wheel arches off the Lexus RX and the nose off a Volvo (plus a bit of a mad half hour with a ruler and a set of french curves by a blind man).
