Golf R Performance Pack in the UK!

Better brakes, more speed and a louder exhaust - just in time for Christmas!

Volkswagen has confirmed prices for a new Golf R Performance Pack in the UK, just in case you thought it had been a while since PH had discussed that fast VW.

See, look, round pipes and not oval ones
See, look, round pipes and not oval ones
As you may recall when the Performance Pack was announced for Europe, the upgrade is comprised of the (2kg lighter) 'R-Performance' brake system with silver calipers, and 19-inch 'Spielberg' alloy wheels. The electronic limiter is also removed from the 310hp 2.0-litre engine, meaning new top speeds of 166mph for the hatchback and 168mph for the estate, up from 155 in both. The hatchback receives a rear roof spoiler too, providing an extra 20kg of downforce.

It will cost you £2,300, which may seem steep for extra speed most owners will never reach and downforce they'll never need. Luckily the Performance Pack is only available for the DSG version of the car, so all you manual-owning PHers needn't worry about feeling tempted to splurge.

Oh alright, here's a closer look

What you may be more tempted by - and which is available for all new Golf R hatchback models - is the Akrapovic exhaust also announced today. Made available alongside, but not as part of, the Performance Pack, the titanium system features round tailpipes in place of the current oval ones and valve control technology. This apparently results in "an incomparable exhaust sound, particularly at high revs and when shifting gear"; it is priced at £2,975 as a standalone option.

Whichever additions you go for will be installed at the factory, with the price added on to the £32,710 (manual), £33,995 (DSG), or £35,700 (estate) starting price of the car.

Alternatively, if a fast Golf is your thing, you could buy this entire Golf R32 for less than the cost of the Peformance Pack and exhaust together. Which are you more tempted by?

guess you don't like the interaction of manual cars, Mr journalist - no wonder they are dying out.

I'm sure the critics will be along shortly, but for me they look like some decent upgrades.

And I like the subtle image of the Golf, a car for grownups you could say.

Worth noting that the exhaust isn’t available on the estate.

Even as a diehard VW fan, these upgrades look stupidly expensive.

er....they're not dissing the manual version??

More like taking the piss out of VW for comically expensive extras.

This is not true, check the configurator. Pudding stirrers rejoice!

I'm sorry, but anyone who spends three grand on an exhaust needs their head testing.

A £3k exhaust on a £30k car seems like a lot.

The big question for me on this PP is whether you can buy the pack with the pretoria wheels but without the spielberg alloys.

Unless I am mistaken, the press pictures, including the Frankfurt show car have the (lighter weight?) pretorias fitted, not the spielbergs.

or more to the point, why would VW make noise about the weight loss on the PP brakes if the spielberg wheels are heavier than the pretorias ?

for those with OCD the speilberg spokes also face backwards on the drivers side and forwards on the passenger side.

Although Renault charged £2,250 for one on an R26.R back in 2008 so adjusting for inflation......its still expensive

Titanium isn't cheap my bike system cost £1600 so 3k for a car system sounds about right.

If the calipers are bigger there may be an incompatibility with particular wheels.

I'm quite aware smile

I just don't particularly see the need on something like a Golf. They could offer a diamond-encrusted steering wheel and justify the price on the material cost but it'd still be somewhat unnecessary.

It's not my money, though, so people can do what they like smile

£3k for a 'performance' exhaust from VW is a joke when you can get a similar switchable option from BMW and Mercedes for £1k or less. If you've got a 40i BMW you can get a full M Performance sports exhaust with a warranted remap for £1800 or less including fitting.

Yes it's an Akra, but the differences are minimal.

I HATE the sound of these twin clutch fart boxes and an Akropovic exhaust won't help things. All I hear on the streets is FART, FART, FART, FART, FART while some idiot flaps his way through all the gears to 30mph in the most antisocial way possible. A class AMG is another culprit too.

Good points. Someone truly interested in the drive will know 18" do a better allround job. And there VW has forged rims from the base Clubsport, Belvedere they are called and they reportedly weigh in under 8kg a piece. Look great too imho. Most people splurge for the 19" still. Oh well.

Even Porsche will sell you a sports exhaust for less than £3K - not titanium or Akrapovic though - maybe VW are learning from the best.
