Toyota GT-One: Pic of the Week

PH brings itself into 2015 with a 4K desktop wallpaper... of a car from 1998

The launch of a Dallara road car is tremendously exciting news for car fans. Why? Just look at the list of road and race cars Dallara has been involved with: Ferrari 333SP, Maserati MC12 and Lancia LC2 to name three.

There's another too, that we weren't aware of: Dallara built the chassis for the Toyota GT-One Le Mans car. And, well, we never need a reason to feature late-90s GT1 sportscars, so with newsworthy justification to...

This pic is from the 1998 Le Mans 24 Hours, the #28 car driven by Martin Brundle, Emmanuel Collard and Eric Helary; it never made the race finish, and the highest placed Toyota was 9th, but the flames and the dirt and the light make it more than good enough for us. Oh yes, and the Dallara link, mustn't forget about that. Get your desktop wallpaper refreshed - now in 4K as well - post haste!

Sorry, it took us so long to offer 4K resolution to you all and as soon as people start using 8K I will start making that readily available on Pic of the Week.

If more people request different sizes I will try my best to accommodate and link to them in future.

The resolution looks great... but for me the way the photographer has tilted the camera is frustrating. I find myself tilting my head to appreciate the lines of the car. I get that a slight angle adds to the sense of speed and drama, but this is too far.

To be allowed to race in the GTP class you had to meet certain criteria. One of those was that the car should be capable of carrying luggage.

Toyota were allowed to race the GT-ONE after convincing the ACO that the car can carry luggage in the fuel tank when it's empty.

I was there in 1998, excellent racing. I was also there in 1999 when with 30 minutes or so to go the leading Toyota GT1 crashed out after crossing some wreckage after another car's tyre blowout. That was a great shame because had the no fault incident not happened they would have had a great and popular victory.

I find it amusing that the previous wallpaper aspect ratio's have been in place since I got them changed back in... January 2012!

All hail the 4k!

Just look for the video of the tyre bursting incident from 1999 on YouTube - and the reactions of Ukyo Katayama, plus his face when he eventually gets back to the pits; it's heart breaking.
Toyota have made some fabulous LMP1/ GT1 cars - but they seem destined to never win it....

Great, long overdue smile

Now if you could just make the glorified thumbnails that pass for expanded photos on news articles into something befitting the 21st century...
