Best of NA Hillclimb Monsters: Time For Coffee?

Tired of turbos? Here's a 2017 review for you!

Yes, we're still looking back on the very best bits of 2017. Why? Well, not only was a pretty good automotive year, all things considered, but also because 2018 isn't going to kick off industry wise for a few days yet. Detroit is but a couple of weeks away...

You'll be pleased to know this isn't a PH review though, instead a 2017 retrospective from HillClimb Monsters - if you've not made any resolutions yet, do watch more of their videos in 2018. It's called 'Best Of HillClimb Monsters - Naturally Aspirated Pure Sound Compilation Pt. 3' and, yes, it's as fabulous as you might well expect. Not only are there howling, yowling, shrieking hillclimb cars sliding their way up serpentine European ascents, the channel has another pair of 10-minute videos like this too.

Highlights? A BMW Z4 GT3, that looks as mad as the prospect sounds on a hillclimb, a very rapid Citroen AX and a Megane Trophy to name but three. Yeah, the proper one, the rear-wheel drive circuit racer with the V6. All making the wonderful kind of noises only atmospheric engines can make. Marvellous.

So if the first day back is dragging already, block out all those around with a healthy dose of hillclimb nirvana. And if that doesn't work, maybe try the other two videos as well...

Unfortunately ITBs now been superseded with an Eaton M45.

Feck me, great driving!

Do you have any more info on the car mods? I purchased an old NA last year after 10 years of more powerful motors (change of circumstances) and would like to extract a little more of everything out of it...

The Griff has 3X torque of the MX5 = 5 sec quicker up Prescott & 4 sec quicker up Shelsey. The MX5 is just as much fun though.

Thanks!

MX5 brief spec-
HSD Monopro coilovers
CL Brakes Pads
Uniroyal Rainsport 3 Tyres (very grippy & cheap)
Suzuki GSXR Throttle Bodies on a Bogg Bros Manifold*
MS2 ECU
Flying Miata Geo Setup
TRS Harness/ TRLane Rollbar/ Kirkey Seat

  • I would not now go ITB as it only gave me approx 140 hp- there are some pretty cheap & simple turbo kits lying around now using the TD04 turbo that will easily give you 200hp.

Hills and Sprints throw up some awesome/interesting/madcap cars .
I used to love marshalling them , they were always friendly and grateful to us for turning up .
Very skillful and committed driving from the vast majority, added in with some insane loonies in huge open wheel historics that frightened the sheep .

Looked like it was fun too thumbup

The MX5 is a fun track car from what I've seen, I've not driven one but had plenty of fun at Snetts watching them shrink a bit in the rear view mirror on the long straights and then having them them all over me through the twisties hehe

Cheers. I contemplated ITB's with my old Elise, but as you say, the HP return for a large investment doesn't make sense. They're responsive though I'd imagine and make a lovely noise. I'd be happy with around 180hp for the road.

Were you on OEM wheels?

Thanks again
